Neil Magny left nothing to chance on Saturday night. And as a result, he etched his name in the UFC’s record books.

The Colorado-based fighter turned up the heat in the second and third round of his UFC 179 fight against William Macario, earning a TKO victory.

With that, Magny tied a UFC modern-day record. With his fifth win, he ties a one-year record set by Roger Huerta, who went 5-0 in 2007.

Magny (13-3) edged Macario, a TUF: Brazil 2 finalist, in the first round, the fight’s closest, by using his reach to keep Macario at bay.

In the second, Macario stunned Magny, but the downed Magny covered up, kept his composure, and worked his way back to his feet. He soon thereafter delivered a takedown and opened up his offense over the final minute of the round, with Macario more or less saved by the bell.

That didn’t happen in round three, as Magny ended up in top position early. While all of his strikes didn’t land, he threw so many of them that they eventually took their toll. The referee waved the fight off at 2:40 of the third.

Macario (7-2) has dropped two of his past three.
