Werdum, who has won four of his past five fights, will face Hunt, who is 3-1-1 in his past five fights, in the main event.

Round 1: Herb Dean has the main event duties. Here we go — interim heavyweight title fight. Mark Hunt on three week’s notice at 7,200 feet in Mexico City. Tall task. They touch them up. Hunt to center. Nice leg kick from Werdum turns Hunt around. But he takes middle again. Leg kick now from Hunt. Both in a feel out process. Hunt moves in quick with jab, and a high kick from Werdum. Now Hunt with a big shot drops Werdum, but Hunt coolly lets him up, maybe not wanting to be duped into a Fedor scenario. Werdum shoots for a takedown, and Hunt steps out of it. Hunt all poise right now, just waiting to punish Werdum’s aggression. Spinning kick from Werdum lands. Hunt plods forward. Hunt tries to take Werdum’s head off with a punch, and then falls into Werdum’s guard. Werdum trying to set something up. So far Hunt, all 265 pounds of him, is keeping Werdum flattened. Wrist control for Werdum. Hunt still maintaining, even though he’s on the ground with a decorated jiu-jitsu blackbelt. Werdum pushes off the fence, and finally Hunt stands back up. Hunt back to center. A couple of big shots from Hunt, including an uppercut on the break! Werdum ate them and stays steady. Werdum eats a left as he comes in for a takedown. A big right from Hunt as he himself tries for a takedown, and that’s where the round ends. MMA Fighting scores R1 for Hunt, 10-9.
Round 2: They touch them up again. Big pop for Cain Velasquez, who’s cageside. As Werdum tries for a kick, Hunt cocks back and throws a huge punch that misses! Wow. But now he drops Werdum with a straight right hand. Hunt, once again, allows Werdum to get back up — conserving energy. A couple of pushkicks from Werdum. Now he tries a spinning high kick and Hunt pushes him down! Hunt just controlling things right now in moments he’s not headhunting. An exchange there initiated by Hunt, and Werdum counters well. Hunt back to center. Crowd is pouring it on for Werdum, their adopted son. Hunt takes an enormous knee right to the face! Now he pounces as Hunt turtles up! Hammerfists coming in volume! Dean is hovering, and now he calls it off! Werdum is the interim champion. Wow! After getting hit with some big shots, the Brazilian was able to methodically time out a knee that landed flush to the left side of Hunt’s jaw, and he went down in a crash. Werdum followed him in with punches, then hammerfists, then more punches until Dean intervened.
