Before Cain Velasquez rematches Fabricio Werdum in next month’s UFC 196 main event, take a look back at his first UFC heavyweight title fight, which ended in a 1st round mauling of Brock Lesnar at UFC 121.
On the night of October 24th, 2010, a partisan crowd at Anaheim’s Honda Center was on hand to see Cain Velasquez try and become the UFC’s new heavyweight champion. Standing opposite him on fight night was Brock Lesnar, who had survived a 1st round mauling vs. Shane Carwin and came back to submit his foe with a 2nd round arm-triangle choke. Velasquez was advertised as having the chance to become the first Mexican heavyweight champ, while Spike TV dedicated its entire month’s worth of programming to Lesnar, dubbing it “Brocktober.”
At the time of the fight, I (in my very stupidly thought out opinion) had backed Lesnar to beat Velasquez, because BROCKLESNAR!!!! This didn’t happen. Velasquez was taken down twice by Brock but sprung back up without incurring any damage. He even took Lesnar down and peppered him with punches before he returned to his feet. Lesnar was clearly low on energy just over 2 minutes into the fight, and a failed takedown attempt led to the famous Brock Lesnar dance party, then Velasquez beating him up and dropping him with hard strikes. Cain relentlessly punished Lesnar’s face until it was strawberry-colored, and the fight was stopped with 48 seconds left in the 1st round.
You can watch the full video of Velasquez winning the UFC heavyweight title at the top of the page.
This was Brent Brookhouse’s play-by-play as it happened:
Round 1 – Lesnar charges in and Cain is throwing hands and Lesnar with a knee. Right hand by Lesnar. Cain firing punches and Lesnar with a big takedown but Cain gets back to his feet. Elbows to the side of the head by Cain. Brock has him pushed against the cage. Brock dropping down for a double leg and he gets it but Cain stands right back up. Cain manages to get away. Jab by Cain and they’re trading hard. Jab by Lesnar. Cain takes Brock down now and has is back. Lesnar stands back up. Lesnar misses a takedown and he’s stumbing around. Cain hits him hard and Lesnar is hurt. Cain is on top in side control. Cain landing big punches nows. Cain with knee on belly and he’s throwing punches. Lesnar is looking done here. He gets up and eats punches and goes back down. Velasquez landing punches and the fight is stopped! Cain Velasquez wins by TKO (punches), round 1. INCREDIBLE! Velasquez just owned that entire fight.

Also, this wasn’t 100% on the money, but this prediction was pretty damn accurate.
Velasquez will rematch Fabricio Werdum in the main event of UFC 196 on February 6th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
