UFC 196 video recap: Tate puts Holm to sleep in fifth, wins undisputed title

Miesha tate was able to pull off a major upset by choking out Holly Holm late in the fifth round of their co-main event fight.

After nine years in the professional mixed martial arts game and facing the most formidable opponents along the way, it was only a matter of time before Miesha Tate had a UFC gold belt around her waist.

She might not have a dominant run like Ronda Rousey had in the last four years, but her wealth of experience and continuous improvement was what gave her the victory over Holly Holm.

What was the high point of the fight?

It was expected for Holm to use her reach edge and distance to her advantage. But the high point of the fight came in the second and fifth round, when Tate took the fight to the ground both times.

Props to Holm for surviving the first submission attempt, but unfortunately for her, it did not work the second time around. While she was able to stuff some of Tate’s takedowns, she was pretty much helpless in the moments when she had her back taken.

This loss should serve as a stern reminder for Holly Holm about further sharpening her ground game.

Where do these two go from here?

As previously stipulated by Dana White, the winner of the bout faces the shelved Ronda Rousey some time at the tail end of 2016. While Rousey’s return has not been set in stone, we could very well be seeing a part three between her and newly crownd champ Miesha Tate.

Holly Holm may have just experienced her first professional loss, but she is definitely still one of the elite in the UFC women’s bantamweight division. A fight against a top ten contender such as Cat Zingano could be an intriguing match-up to make next.

Watch now, later or never?

This is a must-watch fight. For the entire duration of the fight, Tate looked like at a huge disadvantage in terms of the stand-up exchange, but being able to pull-off the submission later in the fifth was definitely a noteworthy moment.
