Check out who won the post-fight awards and bonuses in the wake of UFC 198 in Curitiba, Brazil.
The Brazilian bonanza that was UFC 198 is now in the books. The event, which is the first show the UFC has ever held in the storied fight-city of Curitiba, lived up to expectations – delivering a number of thrilling upsets and dramatic finishes. In what must have been a difficult decision for the UFC brass, the following fighters received a $50,000 bonus check.
Fight of the Night: Francisco Trinaldo defeats Yancy Medeiros by unanimous decision
Performance of the Night: Stipe Miocic and Ronaldo Souza
In a wild back and forth contest that saw both men on the verge of being stopped, Francisco Trinaldo and Yancy Medeiros earned an extra $50,000 a piece. For Massaranduba, this was incredibly his sixth win in a row and tenth victory in the UFC. However, until tonight the Ultimate Fighter Brazil veteran had never earned a post-fight bonus. Medeiros, on the other hand, had twice before received a post-fight award. At The Ultimate Fighter 20 Finale in 2014, Medeiros took home a bonus check for Performance of Night after he defeated Joe Proctor via first round submission. In the fight before this, at UFC 177, Medeiros also earned a POTN bonus, thanks to a bulldog choke induced submission over Damon Jackson. With the loss, Medeiros’ record falls to 12-4 (1 NC).
Stipe Miocic silenced the Brazilian crowd when he landed a short right hand that put then-champion Fabricio Werdum to sleep. The victory was Miocic’s third KO/TKO stoppage in a row and this is the sixth time Miocic has earned a post-fight bonus check. In his previous fight, a mauling of Andrei Arlovski at UFC 195 in January, Miocic was awarded Performance of the Night honors. In 2014, Miocic also earned a POTN award, in Brazil, after knocking out Fabio Maldonado. Miocic also earned Fight of the Night awards in losses to Junior dos Santos and Stefan Struve (his only losses to date). In his second ever UFC fight, versus Philip de Fries, Miocic walked away with a Knockout of the Night bonus.
‘Jacare’ Souza cruised to victory versus Vitor Belfort, who he manhandled and bloodied before the fight was waved off late in the first round. Souza, who is ranked second among all UFC middleweights, earned his sixth win in the UFC and locked up his third UFC post-fight bonus. Prior to besting Belfort, Souza earned a POTN award after submitting Gegard Mousasi in the main event of 2014’s UFC Fight Night 50. In 2013, Souza received a Submission of the Night bonus after choking out Chris Camozzi at UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Rockhold. With the victory Souza, who is now 22-4 (1 NC), supported his claim for a shot at UFC gold.
