The No. 5 ranked middleweight contender claims Conor McGregor threatened him with a knife in a private message.
Gegard Mousasi is no longer staying quiet. The usually soft-spoken middleweight contender went on a rant at UFC 204’s post-fight press conference, putting the entire 185-pound division on blast and also referencing Conor McGregor’s bottle-throwing antics at the UFC 202 pre-fight press conference.
“Maybe throw some bottles on someone’s head,” Mousasi said when asked what he could do to get the recognition he deserves.
McGregor, 28, was recently fined $150,000 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for lobbing water bottles and cans of Monster Energy at team Diaz during the Las Vegas conference. Nate Diaz, who acted first, will also face punishment from the commission at a later date.
Mousasi claims to have gone back-and-forth with ‘The Notorious’ in private messages, alleging that McGregor even threatened him with a knife at one point.
“People liked it,” Mousasi said to Flo Combat about his rant in Manchester, England. “I just spoke the truth. Sometimes you have to say stupid sh*t before people notice you. I got a private message from Conor McGregor. He was cursing at me, the little f**k. He was threatening me. I said ‘What are you going to do with your 50 kilos?’ The f****r was threatening me with a knife. He knows I could beat his ass any day.
“I said some stuff that I didn’t mean,” Mousasi said. “I said ‘People don’t know who the real fighter is or not.’ Of course he’s a top fighter. English is not my first language and I just blurt stuff out sometimes. I thought it was funny that he was messaging me.”
McGregor, who has emerged as the sport’s biggest star, will take on lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in an attempt to become the UFC’s first simultaneous two-division champion. The bout will headline UFC 205, the blockbuster pay-per-view scheduled for Nov 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Mousasi, 31, put on a stunning performance against Vitor Belfort at UFC 205, TKO’ing the legendary Brazilian in the second round at Manchester Arena. ‘The Dreamcatcher’ catapulted to No. 5 in the official 185-pound rankings, and could be just one fight away from a title shot against Michael Bisping.
