UFC 216 to take place in Edmonton in September
Edmonton has finally landed their first UFC event.
Edmonton has waited a long time for the UFC, and it’s finally going to come to the City of Champions. On the one-year anniversary of their new arena, no less. The promotion and the Oilers Entertainment Group have confirmed that UFC 216 will take place on September 9th in Rogers Place.
Bob Nicholson, vice-chairman and CEO of the Oilers Entertainment Group (the arena owner) spoke to the Edmonton Journal about the deal:
“It goes back to having great partners. We did the Professional Bull Riding deal with IMG and now we’re able to bring this to Edmonton as an extension of that partnership.”
The belief is that the event will feature two title fights, but no bouts have been rumored for the show as of yet.
This PPV will be the first major MMA show in Edmonton since Zuffa brought the WEC to town in June of 2010. WEC 49 featured a lightweight fight between Jamie Varner and Kamal Shalorus as the headliner, where Varner overcame two vicious groin kicks to fight to a draw. It also featured the promotional debut of future UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao.
Tickets will go on sale at a later date.
