Amanda Nunes defended her title for the third straight time with a fifth-round stoppage victory over Raquel Pennington at UFC 224.
Over the past few months, there have been talks about a possible super-fight between Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes, but nothing obviously came to fruition. So when the UFC booked “The Lioness” for her third title defense against Raquel Pennington at UFC 224, she did deliver and did so in impressive fashion.
What was the high point of the fight?
From the get-go, Nunes was pressing the action forward as Pennington was mostly forced towards the fence. The champion’s striking prowess was in full display, landing hard punches and leg kicks that were enough to incapacitate her challenger.
Save for a takedown that Pennington scored, the rest of the fight saw nothing but Nunes’ dominance, both on the ground and on the feet. There was a bit of controversy, however, when Pennington was still urged by her corner to carry on and fight the final round, despite expressing her intent to no longer continue at the end of the fourth.
Where do these two go from here?
Pennington will likely fall a few spots down after this loss, where she will need to work her way back up. But as for Nunes, the ideal situation for her right now would be to either face someone like Holly Holm or push for the Cyborg super-fight to further boost her stock value.
Watch it now, later or never?
Nunes is always a fun fighter to watch, and this was one of her more impressive performances as of late. Catch it now and enjoy.
