In the main event of UFC 230, Daniel Cormier put on a wrestling clinic against Derrick Lewis to pick up a second round rear-naked choke and defend his UFC heavyweight title.
What was the high point of the fight?
Less then a minute into the first round, Cormier secured a takedown and started to work from half guard. Eventually working his way to back control, some heavy ground and pound from Cormier in the final minute of the first had Lewis covering up.
In the second round, an ankle pick from Cormier sent Lewis to the canvas again, and whilst trying to stand up in typical Derrick Lewis fashion, ‘DC’ snatched on to Lewis’ back and sunk in the rear-naked choke to finish the fight.
Where do these two go from here?
In his post-fight interview. Cormier wasted no time in calling out who will likely be his next opponent inside the octagon, Brock Lesnar. No other fight really makes sense for Cormier, apart from a rematch with Stipe Miocic if Lesnar for some reason is unable to fight in the UFC. But all signs point towards a fight between Cormier and Lesnar.
Not many people would have been surprised to see Lewis dominated on the canvas by Cormier, so in that sense this loss isn’t hugely detrimental to “The Black Beast”. With most of the top-ten at heavyweight having fights booked, the only matchup that is logical to make on paper for Lewis is one with Miocic.
Watch it now, later or never?
Watch it now, as Cormier was simply too much for Lewis to handle.
