Watch the first fight between Dustin Poirier and a then-debuting Max Holloway at UFC 143.
When Dustin Poirier was scheduled to fight at UFC 143 back in 2012, his original opponent was Erik Koch. Then Koch withdrew, paving the way for Ricardo Lamas to step in. Lamas got injured, and some 4-0 Hawaiian named Max Holloway was brought in on short notice to headline the FX prelims. Poirier ended up winning by triangle-armbar, but Holloway gave it a good effort and showed glimpses of his future greatness.
Seven years later, Holloway stands at the UFC’s reigning men’s featherweight champion, while Poirier is vying for the interim lightweight title against the man he beat, and indeed is the only one to finish Max.

Here’s Brent Brookhouse’s play-by-play:
Dustin Poirier vs. Max Holloway – Round 1 – holloway misses a front kick and Poirier with a hard leg kick. Poirier with a nice punch and leg kick. Leg kick again and a right hand but now Holloway comes back with a few nice punches. They’re exchanging some nice strikes and Poirier looks for the takedown but can’t get it. Holloway is defending these takedown attempts well but finally Poirier is able to just power through the double and passes right into mount. Elbow by Poirier. Holloway gets tagged trying to escape. Poirier takes an arm then ends up transitioning to a triangle, now a mounted triangle and now adds an armbar to it and Holloway has to tap out. Dustin Poirier wins by submission (mounted triangle armbar), 3:23 of round 1.
