Dustin Poirier handed Max Holloway his first UFC loss since 2013 to become the interim UFC lightweight champion.
In the main event of UFC 236, Dustin Poirier proved to be too much for Max Holloway as he won a unanimous decision to become the new interim UFC lightweight champion.
What was the high point of the fight?
Poirier landed some good leg kicks early then seemed to wobble Holloway with a left hand, but Holloway fired back with a left of his own. Poirier then hurt ‘Blessed’ badly with a right hand and poured on the pressure but Holloway survived.
After struggling in the first two rounds, Holloway began to find his rhythm in the third round, but Poirier continued to land the harder shots. A knee from Poirier opened up a big cut on the forehead of Holloway in the fourth round.
Where do these two go from here?
Making his UFC lightweight debut on the night, Holloway was unranked at 155-pounds before this fight. This is Holloway’s first loss since 2013, and ‘Blessed’ was on a 13-fight winning streak before his loss to Poirier. Still the featherweight champion, Holloway will likely return back to 145-pounds and attempt to defend his title in that weight class.
With the interim title win, a fight with the undisputed champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is surely next for Poirier. Questions were raised before the fight to whether Tony Ferguson would be next in line for Khabib, but with the timeline for Ferguson’s return being unclear, Poirier should fight for the title next.
Watch it now, later or never?
Watch it now to see Poirier’s superior boxing that ultimately secured him the win.
