Alex Volkanovski is reportedly in hospital due to a blood infection.
Alexander Volkanovski’s UFC 237 post-fight celebration has been cut short, as it’s been reported that the streaking featherweight contender is currently in hospital being treated for a type of blood infection.
According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani Volkanovski, who beat former featherweight king Jose Aldo via unanimous decision at Rio de Janeiro’s Jeunesse Arena last Saturday, the 30-year-old was admitted to a local hospital in Brazil after demonstrating fever-like symptoms and a swollen foot.
Volkanovski is currently being treated with antibiotics while he awaits his blood test results.
“Alex Volkanovski is currently in a hospital in Santiago, Chile, per his manager. As he left his Rio hotel yesterday, he complained of sore feet, redness of his left foot and feeling unwell. Upon landing in Santiago, his condition worsened. He had a fever and increased swelling of the foot. After getting checked out by a doctor in the Chile airport, Volkanovski was admitted to a hospital. He is currently being treated for a type of blood infection. Unknown when he‘ll be discharged. He’s currently resting while on antibiotics and awaiting blood test results,” Helwani reported on Tuesday morning.
Prior to his win over Aldo, Volkanovski knocked out former title challenger Chad Mendes in the second round at UFC 232. The Australian is currently ranked in the UFC’s top-four at featherweight.
