UFC 239 is underway and the Fight Pass portion of the prelims just wrapped up with Edmen Shahbazyan running right through Jack Marshman. Shahbazyan came out, got the takedown, landed ground strikes, took the back, and then got the sub. The entire sequence took all of 72-seconds for the 21-year old Shahbazyan to get the finish. The future looks bright for the undefeated middleweight prospect.

Before that, Alliance MMA’s Chance Rencountre came into tonight’s event as a heavy betting underdog, and ended up upsetting the favored Ismail Naurdiev. Rencountre owned the ground exchanges, rendering Naurdiev completely defensive off of his back for a large chunk of the fight. Rencountre now owns back to back wins inside of the UFC. Opening up the event, Julia Avila made good on her UFC debut by earning a dominant decision win over Pannie Kianzad. She was able to use her hands to hurt her opponent multiple times and she also owned Kianzad on the ground.

Fight Pass Prelims:

Edmen Shahbazyan def. Jack Marshman by submission (RNC) at 1:12 of round 1: Middleweight

Chance Rencountre def. Ismail Naurdiev by unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28, 30-27): Welterweight

The welterweights went right at it, exchanging hard combos. Naurdiev quickly began to take over the fight, stinging Rencountre with head kicks. Rencountre was able to get a takedown to slow the pace. He kept the takedown, controlling and chipping away from the top until the round expired.

It took Rencountre less than ten-seconds to take the back in the second round. The ground-dominance of Rencountre continued right where it left off at the end of the opening act. Naurdiev offered up absolutely nothing from his back and stayed on the floor until the bell sounded.

Naurdiev was able to stuff the first couple of takedown attempts from Rencountre in the final round. A few explosive techniques landed, but Naurdiev ultimately exposed his back to Rencountre and fell back to the ground. Rencountre continued to grind away and rack up control time. Naurdiev eventually made it back to open space just in time to score a last second takedown.

Julia Avila def. Pannie Kianzad by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26 x2): (W) Bantamweight

Avila found some early success in the clinch. She was able to land some quality knees to the head before Kianzad returned to open space. Kianzad looked smooth on the feet, but did eat several clean punches to the face when she backed straight up in a line. Kianzad was able to eat them rather well.

Avila went right back to the clinch in the second act but Kianzad was ready to defend. Kianzad returned to open space and looked to get her range striking going. Avila scored again when she blitzed with a punching combo and Kianzad backed straight up. Then, Avila rocked her! Avila blitzed again, lighting up Kianzad against the fence. Avila was able to use her hands to hurt Kianzad in the final round before taking the fight to the ground. On the floor, Avila owned a battered Kianzad, controlling her and surfing from position to position until time ran out.
