Max Holloway’s quest to become the next Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champ-champ came to an unsuccessful end this past April, after coming up short to Dustin Poirier at UFC 236 in a “Fight of the Night” performance.
But just because he hit a speed bump, doesn’t mean Max’s dreams of winning the Lightweight title are over. Indeed, the current UFC Featherweight king knows he will get back to another title fight at 155 pounds.
And he doesn’t care how many wins it takes to get there.
“‘55 ain’t far off. That’s only 10 pounds, that’s all it is, is 10 pounds. We’ll get back there when we get back there. Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later and we’ll see what happens. If it takes a 10-fight win streak to fight for another belt up there, become the double champ, it takes a 10-fight streak,” he said during a recent media luncheon via MMA Fighting.
“That’s what it is. I ain’t scared of no work and you guys all know that. Put my nose down and get to work I guess.”
His loss to Poirier was his first in five years, and despite losing his 13 fight win streak, Holloway will never up any excuses, including the weight difference. One thing he will say, though, is that the man who is going to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 240 on July 27, 2019 is not the same one that fought three months ago.
“It’s in my history. You guys watch my fights, you guys go back to all my fights, I’m a different guy every time and come July 27 you guys are going to see a different guy in there again,” he said.
“The kid that showed up in April, the guy you’re looking at, standing in front of him, I’d kill that kid. I’d body him. There’s no comparison and it happens, this sport or life, period, is like Chutes and Ladders. Sometimes you’ve got to slide down to climb up a bigger ladder.”
A win for Holloway will give him his third title defense at 145 pounds, and will give him his fourteenth straight win in the division. Should he lose, don’t be too surprised if his move up to 155 pounds comes sooner, rather than later.
