Kamaru Usman realized a fifth round TKO of Colby Covington to retain his welterweight belt in an epic war that was the UFC 245 main event.
UFC 245 saw the 170-pound champ, Kamaru Usman, wage absolute war with the #2 ranked welterweight, Colby Covington, and pulled out a TKO late in the fifth frame.
This fight was epic! Despite tremendous wrestling chops on both sides of the table, these warriors stood and traded for the entire fight. Both men landed some serious blows throughout, punches and kicks alike. Just when this thriller looked like it was heading to the scorecards, Usman scored two lockdowns in the fifth frame, and then finished off Covington with ground strikes to get the win.
What was the highlight of the fight?
The highlight of the fight was the finishing sequence from Usman. He blasted Colby with a sinister right hand that dropped him for the second time in the round, and then finished him off with some good ol’ fashioned ground and pound.
Where do these two go from here?
Usman could very well see BMF Jorge Masvidal in his next title defense. That is, if Masvidal even wants the fight. Masvidal is looking for the biggest payday possible, and that isn’t necessarily a fight with the champ. Tyron Woodley and Leon Edwards might be squaring off next, with the winner possibly getting a shot at Usman. With as awesome as this fight was, a rematch would be downright fantastic. Santiago Ponzinibbio is on a crazy tear, but hasn’t really beat anybody at the very top yet. Nobody else is really in title contention at the moment.
Covington thought he suffered a broken jaw in the third round, so he might be on the shelf for a while. Upon his return, he could fight the loser of the potential Woodley vs. Edwards matchup. He could also probably talk his way into a fight with former friend Jorge Masvidal. The most fun just might be a rematch with Usman though.
Watch now, later, or never?
Go watch this right now! It was an absolute banger of a main event. It was two men going toe to toe, with neither individual willing to give an inch. It was two wrestlers who did anything but grapple, and the bout ended in a finish. What’s not to love?
