Jon Jones retained his light heavyweight title with a decision win over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247.
Although the fight was much closer than the scorecards made it out to be, Jon Jones retained his light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Dominick Reyes in the main event of UFC 247.
What was the high point of the fight?
Unlike some of Jones’ past opponents, Reyes came firing out the blocks with a high volume of strikes from the opening bell. Reyes backed up Jones by landing a couple of hard left hands and some good kicks to the body. Jones improved in the second round but Reyes’ success on the feet continued.
Jones landed a takedown at the beginning of the fourth round but Reyes did a great job of defending as Jones tried to drag him back down to the ground. Come the fifth round it was clear Jones was the much fresher fighter, as Reyes’ output had dropped and it was Jones who was landing more strikes on the feet.
Where do they go from here?
It’s the third consecutive title defense for Jones since winning his light heavyweight title back. ‘Bones’ could either wait to fight the winner of Corey Anderson vs. Jan Blachowicz 2, make the move up to heavyweight next, or we see an immediate rematch of a controversial bout.
Reyes proved a lot of doubters wrong in this fight as he put on a tremendous performance against Jones. Given Reyes has beaten many of the top contenders at light heavyweight, it’s hard to play matchmaker for him at the moment. Maybe if Jones moves up to heavyweight and there is no rematch, Reyes could fight the winner of Anderson vs. Blachowicz 2.
