Dustin Poirier avenged his loss in the main event of UFC 257, stopping Conor McGregor in the second round.

In the main event of UFC 257, Dustin Poirier became the first man to knockout Conor McGregor, winning by second-round TKO.

McGregor came into the rematch after a year away from the octagon, whilst Poirier hadn’t fought since a decision win against Dan Hooker last June.

What was the high point of the fight?

Poirier secured a takedown early in the first round but after manoeuvring his back against the fence McGregor was able to get back to his feet. Both men were exchanging shoulder strikes in the clinch.

In the second round, Poirier was landing some good low kicks to the lead leg of McGregor. The Irishman was catching the kicks of Poirier and backing him against the fence. The two started throwing heavy shots against the cage and Poirier landed a left hand followed by some huge punches, after McGregor went down Poirier landed a couple of follow-up shots and the fight was over.

Where do they go from here?

With Khabib Nurmagomedov out of the picture, Poirier has to fight for the vacant lightweight title next. Whether it’s against Justin Gaethje or Charles Oliveira, in his mind Poirier is the champion already.

It’s impossible to predict what’s next for McGregor. Will the UFC want to book the trilogy with Poirier regardless of the title? McGregor may switch to the boxing ring to entertain a fight with Manny Pacquaio or (God forbid) Jake Paul next.

Watch it now, later or never?

It was an awesome finishing sequence from Poirier, watch it now.
