Amanda Nunes didn’t have any trouble keeping her title against Megan Anderson
There is no such thing as a definitive lock in MMA, but if there was a fight at UFC 259 that was close to a guaranteed win, it was the co-main event, where Amanda Nunes put her women’s featherweight title against Megan Anderson.
Nunes won the fight with ease. The champion hurt Anderson with her striking early and once the fight went to the ground, it was just a matter of counting the seconds until the end came. That end seemed almost merciful. Nunes could have used her ground strikes to put damage on Anderson, instead, Nunes went for a submission and forced the tap from Anderson at 2:03 of the first stanza. Anderson’s offense amounted to two landed strikes.
The key question that came out of this fight is what will the UFC do with the women’s featherweight division? That is a legitimate question. Unless the UFC wants to pay Nunes to run over unqualified opponents, it needs to build the division. Otherwise, Nunes is going to rake in champion’s cash for crushing future foes and that won’t sit well with the UFC accounting department.
UFC 259 took place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view event streamed on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+ and early prelims on ESPN+ and UFC Fight Pass.
