Zane Simon & Eddie Mercado are here to breakdown this Saturday’s, May 15th, ‘UFC 262: OLIVEIRA VS. CHANDLER’ event. The guys will have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event.
Bloody Elbow fight experts, Eddie Mercado & Dayne Fox, are here tonight – Saturday, May 15th., 2021, to breakdown the UFC 262: ‘Oliveira vs. Chandler’ event, which was broadcast from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, with our second live full capacity crowd since the start of the pandemic. The guys will have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event in the player above, or on our Bloody Elbow Presents YouTube Channel and BE Presents Podcast Network. (SPOILERS…)
Returning to the octagon for the main event, we had multiple UFC record-holder, Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira. who entered the bout the favorite, with a remarkable 30-8 record, the most submission wins in UFC history at 14 & tied for the most finishes at 16. ‘Do Bronx’ has also received 17 post fight bonuses (including 11 performance of the night bonuses, the most in UFC history), and was currently ranked #3 in the lightweight division.
Oliveira was banging it out in this title fight against power striker and three-time Bellator MMA Lightweight Champion, as well as winner of the Bellator Season Four Lightweight Tournament, Michael Chandler. Who was also now the #4 ranked Lightweight since joining the UFC in his debut on January 24 of this year against Dan Hooker at UFC 257. ‘Iron Mike’ entered the bout with an impressive, 22-5 record, on a three-fight win streak against the likes of Hooker, Benson Henderson & Sidney Outlaw – which were all striking finishes around the two minute mark of the first round.
This time his physicality wouldn’t earn ‘Iron Mike’ the ‘W’ or the belt, Oliveira came into round 2 with a vengeance, got Chandler on the run against the cage and stopped HIM via punches in just 19 seconds. In an emotional moment after his spectacular performance immediately post-fight, ‘Do Bronx’ hugged his new belt in tears, unaware he had just secured a $75K POTN bonus. We have a new Undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion of the World: Mr. Charles Oliveira. It may have taken him more UFC fights to get to the belt than any other fighter in UFC history; but his time has finally come. Chandler declared he would be wearing that belt in the next twelve months in his post-fight comments.

In the co-main event, we had another lightweight bout between fan favorite ‘El Cucuy’ Tony Ferguson and ‘Benny’ Beneil Dariush. Ferguson was coming off two losses to Oliveira and Gaethje in 2020, with a current 25-5 record, the well-rounded combat artist was ranked #5 in the division. Meanwhile, Dariush, a BJJ specialist from Iran, was on a six-fight win streak, five finishes (three of them subs), making him the oddsmakers favorite here – despite carrying the rank of #9 in the division. He was coming at this bout with an impressive 20-4 record, having last lost to Alexander Hernandez at UFC 222, back in March of 2018. He did not disappoint, in what proved to be a dominating victory over ‘El Cucuy’ tonight.
Also on the card, we had an exciting Flyweight bout between Matt ‘Danger’ Schnell, with his 15-5 record, after defeating Tyson Nam in January by Split Decision, who was matched up against Rogério Bontorin, sporting a 16-3 record, coming off two losses during the last year, he put on an impressive performance to a unanimous decision victory. In addition to that, we had a fun match-up between Women’s Flyweights, ‘Blonde Fighter’ Katlyn Chookagian and ‘Vivi’ Viviane Araujo. Katlyn has won her last bout via decision against Cynthia Calvillo at UFC 255, while Vivi has won her last two bouts against Roxanne Modafferi & Montana De La Rosa, both via decision. That being said, Chookagian was the Bloody Elbow staff favorite here. These bouts were preceded by our featured main card opener with a bizarre delayed reaction knockout when Shane Burgos faced off with Edson Barboza for a FOTN show, and we had an extensive seven-bout undercard well worth discussing as well.
This week the guys’ picks heading into the event were:
Eddie: Chandler, Dayne: Oliveira
Both: Dariush
Eddie: Bontorin, Dayne: Schnell
Both: Chookagian
Both: Barboza
Both: Souza
Both: Vannata
Eddie: Wright, Dayne: Pickett
Eddie: Shevchenko, Dayne: Lee
Both: Mazany
Eddie: Aguilar, Dayne: Lutz
Both: Giagos
Overall, this now 12-bout card saw two exhilarating first round finishes, three gnarly submissions, four impressive KO/TKO’s – including our Title Fight, and five solid decisions – one split. Rounding things out, bonuses for putting forth POTN efforts went to Charles Oliveira and Christos Giagos; FOTN honors went to Edson Barboza vs. Shane Burgos, in what many are calling a FOTY contention bout. What a night of fights we have to share with you, join us to discuss all the action…
