UFC Calgary video recap: Poirier obliterates Alvarez in 2nd round

Dustin Poirier ended his rivalry with Eddie Alvarez in brutal fashion at UFC Calgary, picking up a second round knockout victory.

In the main event of UFC Calgary, Dustin Poirier ended his rivalry with Eddie Alvarez by knocking him out in the second round with a devastating barrage of strikes. Their first fight ended in a no contest after Alvarez landed an illegal knee, and an illegal strike in this one proved to be the beginning of Eddie’s downfall.

What was the high point of the fight?

The first round was very much a feeling out process, with Alvarez utilising some good work to body, whilst Poirier was constantly on the front foot landing good combinations that all begun from his strong jab.

Alvarez seemed to be control in the second round, but an illegal 12-to-6 elbow forced a stand up and Poirier would quickly begin to take control. A straight left hand followed by a knee to the body from Poirier backed up Alvarez against the fence. Poirier then swarmed in for the finish, unloading a barrage of strikes that made Alvarez stumble to the canvas and give Poirier his third consecutive finish.

Where do these two go from here?

With talks of an October fight between current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor heating up, Poirier finds himself in a tough position. The 29-year-old hasn’t lost a fight in almost two years, and although Khabib did recently state the winner of Alvarez vs. Poirier deserves the next title shot, you have to think a fight between McGregor and Khabib will be the more likely to materialize.

The fight with Poirier was Alvarez’s last on his UFC deal, so it’s unclear as to where the Philadelphia native goes from here. Hopeful he can secure a better deal for his new contract, Alvarez is still very much a contender at lightweight, and a matchup with Kevin Lee would potentially be a good one for the first in his new deal.
