Julija Stoliarenko passed out twice and left on a stretcher following the UFC Vegas 22 weigh-ins.
As you might expect, women’s bantamweight Julija Stoliarenko will not be able to fight Julia Avila on Saturday night’s UFC Vegas 22 card following her multiple faints at Friday’s weigh-in.
Officials confirmed the bout’s cancellation after Stoliarenko passed out on the scales not once, but twice. Yes, she made the bantamweight limit but why she was even allowed to weigh herself a second time after the first faint is absolutely awful. Stoliarenko was eventually removed from the facility on a stretcher.
This was undoubtedly a scary scene made even worse by the multiple weigh-in attempts.
Afterward, Avila tweeted out her support for Stoliarenko and a speedy recovery.
“Speedy recovery fellow Julia [sic],” Avila wrote. “Your health comes first, hopefully we see each other at another date. Prayers sister.”
We have seen more than our fair share of disturbing weigh-in footage and behind the scenes videos of weight cuts gone wrong just in MMA, let alone other combat sports. There have indeed been cuts that were fatal. This is sadly yet another chapter in witnessing a weight cut with visibly serious consequences, and one can only wonder when we’ll ever see widespread change for the better on this front.
