Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) hits Santiago, Chile, for the first time ever this weekend (Sat., May 19, 2018) with UFC Fight Night 129, headlined by a clash between Top 10-ranked Welterweight contenders Demian Maia (No. 5) and Kamaru Usman (No. 7). Earlier in the evening, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 23 winner Tatiana Suarez takes on Mexican prospect Alexa Grasso, Light Heavyweight prospect Dominick Reyes faces heavy-handed Jared Cannonier, and Andrea “KGB” Lee makes her Octagon debut opposite Veronica Macedo.
If there’s a hole in your wallet after last week’s UFC 224 pay-per-view (PPV) even, worry not. We’re here to show you how to fix that!
What Went Wrong at UFC 224?
Sean Strickland had a blatantly obvious path to victory against Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos, who can’t stop a takedown to save his life. Instead, he chose to engage with a horribly dangerous striker on the feet and wound up getting wheel-kicked into oblivion.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
As far as Raquel Pennington goes, that was more of a, “let’s play with a skewed line” bet than a “sure thing” bet. I figured she’d at least make Amanda Nunes work, not just sit on the fence and get the life beaten out of her for 20 minutes. So it goes …
UFC Fight Night 129 Odds For The Undercard:
Zak Cummings (-155) vs. Michel Prazeres (+135)
Alexandre Pantoja (-130) vs. Brandon Moreno (+110)
Poliana Botelho (-165) vs. Syuri Kondo (+145)
Gabriel Benitez (-200) vs. Humberto Bandenay (+170)
Enrique Barzola (-195) vs. Brandon Davis (+160)
Frankie Saenz (-270) vs. Enrique Briones (+230)
Felipe Silva (-300) vs. Claudio Puelles (+250)
Thoughts: Alexandre Pantoja was actually an underdog for a while. Wouldn’t that have been nice?
As is, there’s still a quality underdog bet in Syuri Kondo. Though Botelha is quite a bit taller than the Japanese standout, she also has a bad habit of just, well, not fighting. Kondo, meanwhile, is nothing if not freakishly busy, landing nine strikes per minute in her Octagon debut. Though she’s worryingly predictable with her endless stream of one-two combinations, Kondo is almost certainly going to outwork Botelho, which is enough for me to recommend betting on her.
Honestly, thinking back on it, Pantoja is probably still a solid investment. Brandon Moreno looked woefully lost on the feet against Sergio Pettis and won’t have the benefit of surprise this time around. I could be undervaluing Moreno — whom I’ll admit I haven’t given enough credit — but his underdeveloped wrestling and striking suggest he’ll get chewed up on the feet by “The Cannibal.”
UFC Fight Night 129 Odds For The Main Card:
Kamaru Usman (-365) vs. Demian Maia (+305)
Tatiana Suarez (-475) vs. Alexa Grasso (+380)
Dominick Reyes (-260) vs. Jared Cannonier (+220)
Diego Rivas (-160) vs. Guido Cannetti (+140)
Andrea Lee (-335) vs. Veronica Macedo (+275)
Vicente Luque (-210) vs. Chad Laprise (+175)
Thoughts: UFC Fight Night 129’s main card is rather bereft of bargains, though if you wanted to use Kamaru Usman to beef up a parlay, I wouldn’t advise against it. He has the wrestling pedigree and monstrous physical strength to recreate Colby Covington’s domination of Maia, only with the addition of a well-developed boxing game. As much as I love Maia, he’s going to get smashed to bits here.
UFC Fight Night 129 Best Bets:
- Single bet — Syuri Kondo: Bet $60 to make $87
- Parlay — Alexandre Pantoja and Kamaru Usman: Bet $50 to make $62.50
It’s free and there are some quality fights to be seen — can’t ask for more! See you Saturday, Maniacs.
