Deiveson Figueiredo stopped Joseph Benavidez for the second time UFC Fight Island 2 main event, and is now the promotion’s flyweight champion.
The top of the UFC Fight Island 2 billing finally crowned a new flyweight champion when the #1 ranked, Deiveson Figueiredo, dropped the #2 ranked, Joseph Benavidez, on a few occasions before ultimately choking him out in the first-round. Despite missing weight in his first attempt at the vacant belt, Figueiredo is officially the UFC’s flyweight champion.
Figueiredo clubbed Benavidez with a left hook about 45-seconds into the fight. Benavidez fell to the ground and Figueiredo followed him, looking to drop elbows. Figueiredo took the back and went for several RNC attempts, but somehow Benavidez survived and stood to his feet. Benavidez got to throwing punches, landing but not seeming to hurt his opposition. Figueiredo landed another stinging shot that sat down Benavidez. Joe B. stood back to his feet, just to get dropped yet again moments later. Figueiredo dropped all sorts of strikes before taking the back and aggressively cranking on a rear-naked choke. Benavidez went to sleep before he had a chance to tap.
