UFC Fight Night 103 results: Biggest winners, loser from ‘Rodriguez vs Penn’ last night in Phoenix

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back at it again, as the world’s largest mixed martial arts (MMA) organization staged UFC Fight Night 103 last night (Sun., Jan. 15, 2017) live from inside Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona on Fox Sports 1.

In the main event of the evening, Yair Rodriguez dominated BJ Penn to spoil “The Prodigy’s” comeback attempt, knocking down the former two-division champion at the start of round two and ending his night with some violent ground-and-pound (highlights).

In the co-headlining act, Joe Lauzon barely edged out Marcin Held after 15 minutes of action, earning a split decision from the Octagon-side judges. That said, “J-Lau” himself wasn’t pleased with the win, proclaiming that Marcin should’ve gotten the nod.

Classy.

Biggest Winner: Yair Rodriguez

This one is no surprise, as “El Pantera” continued to impress and continues his ascension up the featherweight division with his impressive win over the former Welterweight and Lightweight champion. Granted, Penn’s best days may be behind him, but Yair going in and doing what most may have expected, only proves that the young star can get the job done. Period. With eight straight wins in his back pocket, Rodriguez is well on the fast track to the top. And he’s doing it in impressive fashion, creating one highlight reel finish after another.

Runner Up: Sergio Pettis

Don’t look now, but the young combatant is starting to live up to the hype with three consecutive wins on his resume, including taking out the tough as nails John Moraga in a dominant victory in Phoenix. What impressed me the most was his patience after a knockdown, picking his shots and not just simply wailing away like a mad man. Indeed, the 23 year old is looking sharp, and could be a few more impressive wins away from title contention. “The Phenom” may have not had the best start to his Octagon career, but he’s showing maturity in his game that could go a long way in helping him achieve championship glory, much like his older brother.

Biggest Loser: BJ Penn

It was truly hard to watch the living legend take a one-sided beating at the hands of Yair. I mean, it wasn’t competitive at all, as Penn served as a human punching bag for the entire bout before getting brutally finished by the young Mexican-born fighter. That is now four straight defeats for “The Prodigy,” who hasn’t reached the winner’s circle since 2010. While one can appreciate his passion for the sport to want to keep chugging along, going as far as taking up residence in Albuquerque, New Mexico to train with famed Jackson-Wink MMA, it’s probably high time he hangs them up for good. There is no need for him to step in and risk getting beatdown one more time. It just doesn’t make sense, on any level.
