What Went Wrong With UFC Fight Night 106?
Fair play to Kevin Lee — he kept his composure after two huge hits, made the adjustments he had to and managed to stop an extremely dangerous man in Francisco Trinaldo. Well played. Thanks to Michel Prazeres and Edson Barboza, we still came out ahead, at least.

Thoughts: Yep, we can definitely work with this. I like the looks of Timothy Johnson, Teemu Packalen and Scott Askham.
I honestly expected the odds on Johnson vs. Omielanczuk to be a lot wider. The latter has consistently struggled with effective takedown artists and even had issues with lackluster grapplers like Jarjis Danho. His best win is Oleksiy Oliynyk, who was coming off a massive layoff, and he’s giving up 20 or more pounds to Johnson.
A close loss to Alexander Volkov isn’t enough to sway me. Johnson wins this big.
I try really, really hard not to make Melvin Guillard comparisons when discussing Diakiese, but sometimes they’re just impossible to avoid. Diakiese has a habit of getting ahead of himself with his athleticism and falls back on takedowns when things aren’t working on the feet. Packalen has a nasty ground game and ought to be able to snag him in transition. Just don’t go too crazy.
Askham and Scott have both had tough losses in UFC. I and others expected much more from Askham, but I do still think he’s the better fighter. Scott’s been touched up by lesser strikers in the past, isn’t a strong enough wrestler to exploit Askham’s grappling deficiencies, and is on the wrong end of the durability battle. I really think the big man pulls this one out.

Thoughts: Why is Corey Anderson the underdog?
The obvious answer is “because Manuwa just slept Ovince Saint Preux;” however, that was literally the first time Manuwa has looked like a killer since he rearranged Kyle Kingsbury’s face in 2012. His fights with Cyrille Diabate and Ryan Jimmo both ended with bizarre injuries and his decision over Jan Blachowicz was a snoozer. More important, pretty much everyone besides Blachowicz who has wanted to put Manuwa on the mat has gotten him there. Anderson has a habit of getting clipped, but I just can’t pick Manuwa against a takedown artist of this caliber. “Overtime” smashes him on the ground.
