There’ll be no day of rest for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) this Sunday (May 28, 2017) as the world’s largest fight promotion hits Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden, for its latest FOX Sports 1-televised card.
In UFC Fight Night 109’s main event, local favorite Alexander Gustafsson looks to reassert his place among the Light Heavyweight elite when he takes on Glover Teixeira, while Misha Cirkunov attempts to continue his rise through the 205-pound ranks against unexpected contender Volkan Oezdemir.
Welterweight finishers Ben Saunders and Abdul Razak Alhassan will be in action as well against Peter Sobotta and Omari Akhmedov, respectively.
There’s no better time for sinning than the day most holy day, after all. Let’s dig in!
What Went Wrong at UFC 211?
I underestimated Jason Knight in a major way. I firmly believed that Chas Skelly would be able to navigate Knight’s guard without issue, but “The Kid” managed to break Skelly’s arm in the first round and dominate from there. It was an excellent performance from Knight and I look forward to seeing how he does against the upper echelon.
Jessica Aguilar, on the other hand, just baffles me. She landed repeated takedowns on Cortney Casey despite looking two weight classes smaller, but insisted on standing over her and eating Ali-Inoki-style kicking to the knees and shins. She kept doing it even after Casey had turned her face to hamburger. I do not get it.
UFC Fight Night 109 Odds For The Undercard:
Pedro Munhoz (-650) vs. Damian Stasiak (+475) Chris Camozzi (-245) vs. Trevor Smith (+205) Joaquim Silva (-185) vs. Reza Madadi (+160) Nico Musoke (-150) vs. Bojan Velickovic (+130) Darren Till (-340) vs. Jessin Ayari (+280) Marcin Held (-335) vs. Damir Hadzovic (+275)
Thoughts: I’ve got a good feeling about the wrestlers this weekend. Therefore, I’m sure we can squeeze some value out of Trevor Smith and Reza Madadi.
Big, gritty guys with solid grappling appear to be an archetype that Camozzi struggles with. “Hot Sauce” is about as prototypical a big, gritty guy as you’re likely to find in the Middleweight division and he’s an underrated takedown artist. Sure, Camozzi’s shown some improvement in his striking, but he has all of one win over members of the current UFC roster and was taken down repeatedly by his last two opponents. In other words, a moderate bet on Smith sounds good.
Yes, Madadi’s big heist overshadows any of his actual UFC accomplishment, and, yes, he’s too slow and awkward standing to ever crack the Lightweight elite, but he’s a deceptively strong wrestler with a nasty top game. As good as Silva’s looked in UFC, beating Featherweight Nazareno Malegarie and glass-jawed Andrew Holbrook isn’t enough for me to pick him over a tough-as-nails grinder.
UFC Fight Night 109 Odds For The Main Card:
Alexander Gustafsson (-320) vs. Glover Teixeira (+260) Misha Cirkunov (-420) vs. Volkan Oezdemir (+335) Ben Saunders (-115) vs. Peter Sobotta (-105) Abdul Razak Alhassan (-260) vs. Omari Akhmedov (+220) Nordine Taleb (-560) vs. Oliver Enkamp (+430) Jack Hermansson (-140) vs. Alex Nicholson (+120)
Thoughts: You can scrape together a decent parlay with Misha Cirkunov and Jack Hermansson, methinks.
Cirkunov faces something of a wall in the Light Heavyweight Top 5 thanks to its collective uniformly sturdy takedown defense, but his blend of Judo and boxing is too much for almost anyone below him in the rankings. I expect him to dominate Oezdemir, who only beat the worst Ovince Saint Preux in years by the skin of his teeth.
Hermansson disappointed me in a big way against Cezar “Mutante,” but Ferreira put on the best performance I’ve yet seen from him and has a significantly more complete mixed martial arts (MMA) game than Nicholson. Though “The Spartan” has a three-inch height edge, he’s a limited brawler and Hermansson has never been stopped with strikes. Put him in with Cirkunov and bump those odds into the positives.
UFC Fight Night 109 Best Bets:
Single bet — Trevor Smith: Bet $25 to make $51.25
Single bet — Reza Madadi: Bet $20 to make $32.00
Parlay — Misha Cirkunov and Jack Hermansson: Bet $40 to make $44.80
There are definitely several UFC Fight Night 109 fights worth watching … especially if you’re into prospects. See you Sunday, Maniacs!
Initial Investment For 2017: $200 Current Total: $157.18
