UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs. Lobov – Winners and Losers

Find out who the real winners and losers were from UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs. Lobov.

UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs. Lobov is in the books as Nashville, Tennessee was the setting for a night of… okay-fights. Some competitors had stellar performance, and well, some most definitely did not. The evening was headlined by a rather irrelevant bout, as the UFC’s #4 ranked featherweight Cub Swanson picked up a unanimous decision victory over the unranked Artem Lobov. Who were the real winners, and who were the real losers?

Winners:

Al Iaquinta: “Ragin” Al returned to the Octagon following a 2-year layoff with authority, as he blasted Diego Sanchez in a sporty 1:38 of the first round. Iaquinta retained Top-15 status during his hiatus, and seems to be just as sharp as ever. Scoring a one-punch knockout on Diego Sanchez was pretty impressive, even if the chin of Sanchez is a shell of its former self.

OSP: Bagging a Von Flue Choke automatically grants you a seat at the winner’s table.

Mike Perry: Good golly Miss Molly! Mike Perry just annihilated the #13 UFC welterweight, Jake Ellenberger, with a brutal standing elbow that sent the veteran crashing to the canvas unconscious. Don’t be surprised to see Mike Perry ranked in the UFC’s Top-15, and pitted against another big-name opponent in his next fight.

Brandon Moreno: The #10 ranked UFC flyweight Brandon Moreno launched a head kick equalizer to the neck of Dustin Ortiz, then savagely attacked with a Rear-Naked Choke that sent his opponent to la la land. Not only has Moreno now won 3-straight, but he also adds a technical submission to his resume.

Scott Holtzman: In front of his home crowd, Scott Holtzman beat the brakes off of Michael McBride from bell to bell. Holtzman showed off his fight IQ by not grappling with the grappler early on, and by not gassing himself trying to force a finish when the ‘too tough for his own good’ opponent just wouldn’t go away. This was a super strong showing for Holtzman that should set him up for a much bigger fight.

Hector Sandoval: How do you escape a Triangle Choke attempt? Well, if you’re Hector Sandoval and your opponent is Matt Schnell, then obviously you short shot your foe into oblivion. Is that even possible? Yes, it’s a thing. Win!

Losers:

Diego Sanchez: The last time Sanchez had back-to-back wins was when he beat Martin Kampmann at UFC on Versus 3 back in March of 2011. To make matters worse, getting slumped in under 2 minutes by a returning Al Iaquinta could be a sign that the once indestructible chin of Sanchez is officially gone.

Marcos Rogerio de Lima: de Lima has now missed weight for 2-straight UFC fights, which not only hurts his reputation, but also puts a dent in his wallet as well. To throw a bit of salt on the wound, de Lima was submitted by Ovince St. Preux with a Von Flue Choke, which in a way means that de Lima choked himself out. De lima fell to 15-5-1 and has alternated wins and losses in his past 4 fights.

Jake Ellenberger: We will talk about this when he wakes up.

Sam Alvey: When you get out-kickboxed by Thales Leites, you go directly to the loser’s lounge. Do not pass go; do not collect $200.

Michael McBride: McBride is now on the losing end of back-to-back blowouts, as he begins his UFC career 0-2. Do you even UFC, bro?

Joe Proctor: After being out of action since December of 2015, Proctor returns to the Octagon just to eat a plethora of punches and knees from Bryan Barberena, in 3:30 of the first round. This marks the 3rd time in 4-fights that Proctor has been finished in the first round. Yikes!

Matt Schnell: Getting KO’d sucks. Getting KO’d by the shortest hammerfists of all time… that blows. Schnell will wake up in the loser’s lounge.
