Why wait for the weekend to have some fun?

VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., once again hosts Ultimate Fighting Championship this Wednesday evening (May 13, 2020), featuring Light Heavyweight finishers Anthony Smith and Glover Teixeira in starring roles. Also on the bill are Ovince St. Preux and Ben Rothwell in a Heavyweight tussle and a Lightweight clash between Drew Dober and Alexander Hernandez

UFC 249 ended up one of the most bet-on events in modern history. Let’s see if we can’t top that.

What Went Wrong at UFC 249?

The coronavirus KO’d “Jacare” and Carla Esparza had a painfully ill-advised gameplan, but all’s well that ends well. Let’s keep the winning streak alive!

UFC ‘Jacksonville’ Odds For the Undercard:

Philipe Lins (-155) vs. Andrei Arlovski (+135)
Michael Johnson (-110) vs. Thiago Moises (-110)
Sijara Eubanks (-380) vs. Sara Moras (+315)
Omar Morales (-175) vs. Gabriel Benitez (+155)
Hunter Azure (-175) vs. Brian Kelleher (+155)
Chase Sherman (-155) vs. Ike Villanueva (+135)

Thoughts: This card is nowhere near the smorgasbord that Saturday’s is, but there’s still value here, namely in Philipe Lins and Brian Kelleher.

While he may be a natural 205 pounder, Lins has decisively stopped four consecutive mid-tier Heavyweights in a row, while Arlovski has won one fight in his last six. His two wins over Ben Rothwell are his only victories over a current UFC fighter since his 2007 decision over Fabricio Werdum. Lins is absolutely sharp enough to dominate on the feet and has the power to hand “The Pitbull” his twelfth knockout loss.

Considering how rapidly people can improve between fights, banking on someone’s inexperience is always a dangerous game. Still, Brian Kelleher looks like too much, too soon for Hunter Azure. “Boom” is tough enough to hold his own on the vet, is a sufficiently capable wrestler to make Azure really work for his takedowns, and has a guillotine that took out Julio Arce and Ode Osbourne. Don’t go crazy, but Kelleher is worth the investment.

UFC ‘Jacksonville’ Odds For The Main Card:

Anthony Smith (-175) vs. Glover Teixeira (+155)
Ovince St. Preux (-140) vs. Ben Rothwell (+120)
Drew Dober (-120) vs. Alex Hernandez (EVEN)
Ricky Simon (-170) vs. Ray Borg (+150)
Marvin Vettori (-170) vs. Karl Roberson (+150)

Thoughts: Nothing super tempting here — all five fights are well-matched and look to be plenty competitive. That said, I do like Marvin Vettori at -170. As sharp a striker as Karl Roberson is and as much progress as he’s made toward rounding out his game, he still gave up four takedowns to Wellington Turman two fights back. Vettori’s pressure and wrestling attack look like effective weapons against the former kickboxer.

UFC ‘Jacksonville’ Best Bets:

  • Parlay — Philipe Lins and Marvin Vettori: Bet $50 to make $80.50
Single bet — Brian Kelleher: Bet $40 to make $62

UFC “Jacksonville” is a solid card with two guys vehemently opposed to going the distance in the main event. Works for me! See you Wednesday, Maniacs.
