Joseph Benavidez TKO’d Jussier Formiga in the UFC Minneapolis co-main event.
The co-main event for UFC Minneapolis the diminished flyweight division saw the #2 ranked Joseph Benavidez knockout the #1 ranked Jussier Formiga in their rematch. Benavidez worked his striking right out of the gate, leaping in and out with a variety of strikes. Formiga managed to open up a cut around the left eye of Benavidez, which seemed to be a bit of a factor. After falling from throwing a kick, Benavidez gave up his back briefly, but he quickly scrambled back to his feet.
Formiga was able to score a slamming takedown in the second round, but Benavidez spun around into top position. After a bit of control for Benavidez, the fight went back to its feet. The flyweights were exchanging strikes, and then Benavidez landed a slick head kick. He followed up with a barrage of heavy punches. Formiga hit the deck and Benavidez pounded him out for the win. Already having a win over UFC flyweight and welterweight champ Henry Cejudo, Benavidez should be next in line for a shot at the title.
