UFC Fight Night: Ortega v Rodriguez Ceremonial Weigh-in

The main event for this fight night will take place in the featherweight division with a potential title shot at stake, with former challenger Brian Ortega taking on the always-exciting Yair Rodriguez. The co-main will see Michelle Waterson meeting Amanda Lemos in a women’s strawweight battle.

This will be an ABC and ESPN+ show but will be kicking off a a lot earlier than usual. The six-fight preliminary card is scheduled to start at 11amET/8am PT on ESPN+ and big ESPN. The six-fight main card will stay on ESPN+ but the major broadcast will switch from ESPN to ABC, and that is supposed to start at 2pm ET/11am PT.

Brian Ortega vs. Yair Rodriguez

Round 1 – Both men with quick jabs. Nice straight right from Yair. Ortega wades in with a right. Low kick from Rodriguez but he takes a right counter. Rodriguez using his length well early but he’s already cut under the eye. Ortega pressures and gets a body lock. Rodriguez stays upright. Ortega keeps at it and they leg battle. The crowd quickly gets restless as they tangle on the cage. Yair with heel strikes and Ortega is checking them in close. That’s unique. They separate and reset. Rodriguez with a big right, but Ortega walks right through it. Front kick from Rodriguez and Ortega shoots in again. He gets him down but Rodriguez is attacking. OH NO. Ortega dislocated his shoulder. Yair looked for an armbar and T-City pulled it out but his arm didn’t come with him. Brutal. Hopefully they can run it back one day.

Michelle Waterson vs. Amanda Lemos

Round 1 – Waterson is circling on the outside right away. Lemos is out of range. Waterson with a body kick and a low kick. Jab from Lemos lands. Classic Muay Thai stance. Waterson wanders in and gets clipped. Lemos throws a big overhand right that doesn’t connect. Low kick from Waterson lands as she evades the heavy counter. Body kick from Lemos. Waterson with a pretty takedown off a Lemos kick. She’s working in Lemos’ open full guard. Few body punches from Waterson as Lemos alternates between a body lock and butterfly hooks. Waterson steps over but gets tripps and ends up on the bottom right at the end of the round. 10-9 Lemos.

Round 2 – Body kick from Lemos. Right hook too. Another body kick. Waterson with a front kick. Side kick. Another but eats a counter right. Lemos goes to the body. Lemos with a big telegraphed overhand right that Waterson ducks under for a takedown. Lemos with a guillotine! That’s nasty! Waterson tapped but the ref missed it because he was on the other side. But Waterson acknowledged it nonetheless and Lemos let it go. Bit of a strange ending but Lemos gets the win. Both of them handled that very well.

Li Jingliang vs. Muslim Salikhov

Round 1 – Spinning kick connects from Salikhov right away. Li checks a leg kick. Salikhov spins again. Salikhov gets the takedown. Inside’s the Leech’s full closed guard. Back up. Li is pushing forward but not throwing much. Salikhov is doing a good job staying out of range and throwing spinning stuff in return. They trade low kicks. 10-9 Salikhov.

Round 2 – Salikhov with a hard shot that staggers Li. He’s right back in Salikhov’s face though. Body shot scores for Li. Inside leg kick from Li is checked. Salikhov lands a long left. And then a short one. He spins and misses, and Li takes him down. He settles into half guard. Salikhov gets back up pretty quickly though. Li gets inside and they trade body shots. Salikhov spins again but he’s slowed down. Li lands a jab to the body. Salikhov spins and misses. Huge right from Li staggers Salikhov! Another big right hook! Sailkhov dives on a takedown but can’t get it. LI DROPS HIM WITH ANOTHER RIGHT! He jumps on him and gets the finish! Beautiful!

Matt Schnell vs. Sumudaerji

Round 1 – Low kicks from both men. More low kicks. Both men are out of ranges with their punches until Schnell clips his opponent with a left. He gets a takedown and goes to mount. Then back control. Looking for a choke. Sumudaerji tries to roll into guard, and does, but Schnell attacks from the bottom with sub attempts. Sumudaerji lands to the body. He backs out of guard, then jumps back in methodically. Schnell with a triangle attempt, now an omoplata. He takes the top and lands an elbow. More shots 10-9 Schnell.

Round 2 – Quick shot to Schnell’s cup. Cornuts cam confirms. Sumudaerji wobbles Schnell with a big shot on the restart! And again! He’s just spamming straight lefts and leg kicks. They trade low kicks. Huge straight left drops Schnell! Schnell dives on a leg, then gets right up. Standing elbow from Sumudaerji staggers Schnell! ANOTHER! Schnell should be lights out but he’s still there, pressing forward. Two more straight lefts from Sumudaerji and an elbow. Schnell with a shot right back! He staggers Sumudaerji with a right and gets a takedown! Right to mount! Huge elbows from Schnell! This is nuts! HUGE ELBOWS! He’s badly hurt! Sumudaerji reverses somehow but he’s in a triangle! I can barely keep up with the PBP here. Sumudaerji is leaking blood. Schnell is covered in his opponent’s blood. He turns the triangle and Sumudaerji goes to sleep! HOLY HELL THAT ROUND WAS INCREDIBLE.

Shane Burgos vs. Charles Jourdain

Round 1 – Burgos takes the center. Bourdain with a body kick. Another Burgos blocks both. They trade low kicks. Short right from Burgos. Short left from Bourdain. They clinch up and Burgos gets a takedown. Burgos takes the back as Bourdain gets up. Human backpack style. Burgos sinks the choke and drags him down! Is in under the chin? Bourdain looks like he was in danger but he survives. Burgos has a body triangle and he’s looking for it again. Bourdain dumps him off and gives him time to get his mouthpiece back as they reset on the feet. Bourdain with a pretty trip and a big left hook. Now a knee against the cage, and another. Left and a head kick from Bourdain. Burgos with a knee inside. They trade lefts. Jump knee just misses for Bourdain. Close round, but I’ll go 10-9 Burgos.

Round 2 – Burgos bodies Bourdain to the mat and takes the back. Again Bourdain gets up but Burgos has the body triangle and is backpacking him. Short body shots from Burgos. Bourdain tries to dump him off over the top, then tries to roll through. Neither works. Burgos is up high but still managing to maintain control. Well done. Bourdain is down on one knee, then back to his feet. Burgos literally has his head on the mat but still has control somehow. He grabs a leg, looking for a Suloev stretch? He gives that up quickly. Burgos gets him down and looks for a choke, but it’s not under the neck. He’s just trying to crush his face now. Excellent control in a variety of positions from Burgos. He hypes the crowd and lands a few punches. 10-9 Burgos.

Round 3 – Jourdain with a jab. Inside leg kick from Burgos. Now kicking the outside. Nice combo from Jourdain. He pops Burgos with a straight right. They trade shots. Jourdain with some steady volume. He appears to wobble Burgos, who clinches up. Jourdain uses a guillotine attempt to land some knees to the body. Burgos drops to a knee so he doesn’t take any to the head. They break and Jourdain scores with an uppercut. Jourdain is out-boxing the boxer. He presses Burgos against the cage and lands a barrage of shots to the body and head. Knee to the body. Jump knee and a big combo from Jourdain! Huge shots! Burgos walks right through them, as Burgos does. They battle in the clinch. Uppercuts from Jourdain. He’s chasing him across the cage with big shots! Burgos spins him around and takes his back. Jourdain tries to break the hands and plays to the crowd. Big right hook from Burgos! Head kick from Jourdain! Great round. 10-9 Jourdain but I have it 29-28 Burgos. First round will decide it.

Lauren Murphy vs. Miesha Tate

Round 1 – Tate with a left. Murphy fires back. Tate gets wobbled by Murphy as she she tries to clinch. Tate is grappling against the cage. She gets a trip takedown but Murphy pops back up immediately. Murphy is controlling underhooks and they back away from the cage. Tate lands knees to the body. Very clinch-heavy thus far. They finally reset in the middle. Murphy with a right. 10-9 Murphy.

Round 2 – Murphy with a surprising early takedown. Tate gets up after 30 seconds or so. She clinches but eats an elbow. Tate’s nose is busted up. They trade shots. Murphy shoots again but Tate defends. Tate clinches now and looks for the takedown. Footstomps. Knees to the body. Short elbow from Tate lands hard. Tate drops for another takedown attempt but can’t get it. 10-9 Murphy.

Round 3 – Tate’s eye is a mess. Tate digs deep for a takedown but Murphy reverses it. They reset. Jabs from Murphy. Tate lazily shoots in. Murphy with knees in the clinch. Murphy lands to the damaged eye. Front kick from Tate. Murphy jabbing. Big exchange! Murphy shoots. Tate looks for a standing guillotine and some knees. Murphy back to the jab. Tate wades in but eats two shots. 10-9 and 30-27 Murphy.
