What Went Wrong at UFC Fight Night 148 (ESPN+ 6)?
Steven Peterson was more a value bet than anything, so I’m not torn up about him losing; however, I’m genuinely disappointed in Frankie Saenz’s performance. I really thought he was more durable than that — props to Marlon Vera for punishing his overextension. Thankfully, Chris Gutierrez and Maycee Barber were there to limit the losses to the single digits.
UFC On ESPN 2 Odds For The Undercard:
Marina Rodriguez (-300) vs. Jessica Aguilar (+250)
Des Green (-440) vs. Ross Pearson (+350)
Enrique Barzola (-115) vs. Kevin Aguilar (-105)
Kevin Holland (-190) vs. Gerald Meerschaert (+165)
Ray Borg (N/A) vs. Casey Kenney (N/A)
Sabina Mazo (-160) vs. Maryna Moroz (+140)
Alex Perez (-280) vs. Mark De La Rosa (+240)
Thoughts: “The Angel of Death” looks like the best play here, with Kevin Holland and Alex Perez lagging just behind.
I’m a huge fan of Enrique Barzola, but I have to acknowledge that he’s yet to be really tested in the Octagon. His best opponents were Kyle Bochniak and Gabriel Benitez, and if we want to compare his resume to Kevin Aguilar’s, I’d say the likes of Damon Jackson, Thanh Le, and Rick Glenn measure up. Aguilar’s the better striker and will have more than six inches of reach on Barzola, not to mention generally solid takedown defense. He was can’t-miss as an underdog, but Aguilar’s worth an investment even as a slightly lesser favorite.
I’ll acknowledge that Gerald Meerschaert has a habit of pulling ridiculous finishes out of his bum, but Holland looks like a real problem for him. “GM3” has to navigate a height and reach disparity against an ostensibly superior striker who’s incredibly difficult to finish. As dangerous as Meerschaert is on the mat, Holland hasn’t been submitted since his fifth pro fight against world-ranked Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Rafael Lovato Jr. I have Holland picking him apart at range all night.
Alex Perez just looks to be better than Mark De La Rosa in the areas “The Bumblebee” prefers to work in. Perez is the more proven wrestler, submission artist, and judging by his beatdown of “Shorty” Torres, the better striker. He should win this without issue.
UFC On ESPN 2 Odds For The Main Card:
Edson Barboza (-135) vs. Justin Gaethje (+115)
Jack Hermansson (-125) vs. David Branch (+105)
Michael Johnson (-115) vs. Josh Emmett (-105)
Karolina Kowalkiewiz (-145) vs. Michele Waterson (+125)
Kennedy Nzechukwu (-225) vs. Paul Craig (+185)
Sodiq Yusuff (-155) vs. Sheymon Moraes (+135)
Thoughts: I’m not seeing much that stands out to me on the main card. You could put a bit on Kennedy Nzechukwu if you’re so inclined, seeing as he’s got a seven-inch reach advantage against a lesser striker, but that’s about it.
UFC On ESPN 2 Best Bets:
- Single bet — Kevin Aguilar: Bet $52.50 to make $50
- Parlay — Kevin Holland and Alex Perez: Bet $50 to make $53.50
