Joe Riggs returned to the UFC after an absence of eight years to the day.
Unfortunately for the fighter nicknamed “Diesel,” a freak injury brought the festivities to a sudden halt.
Riggs (40-15, 1 NC), who was fighting in his hometown of Phoenix, landed awkwardly while being taken down by Ben Saunders in the opening minute of their welterweight fight Saturday at UFC on FOX 13.
While Saunders went in and tried to work his way for a submission, Riggs had already tapped out to what appeared to be a neck injury, giving Saunders the win at the 57-second mark.
“I was going for an omoplata, but all respect in the world to Joe,” said Saunders (18-6-2). He’s a veteran, one of the best veterans in the Octagon. Huge respect to Diesel.”

While it wasn’t an ideal way to get the victory, Saunders wasn’t about to refuse it. He’s won two straight since returning to the UFC and five of his past six overall.
“It’s good to get a W, good to get a win in the Octagon.”
