Before Rashad Evans fights Glover Teixeira in the UFC on FOX 19 main event, watch Evans’ light heavyweight championship winning performance against Forrest Griffin at UFC 92 in 2008.

Today’s UFC free fight video takes us way back to December 27th, 2008. The stacked UFC 92 featured Quinton Jackson’s annihilation of Wanderlei Silva, Frank Mir starching Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and a light heavyweight title fight between Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans.

Griffin came into the Evans fight as the UFC’s newest champion, having upset Rampage at UFC 86. Evans secured a title shot by knocking the look out of Chuck Liddell’s eye at UFC 88. UFC 92’s main event would be TUF 1 winner vs. TUF 2 winner for 205 lbs supremacy.

In Bloody Elbow’s scoring, Griffin was up 2 rounds to nil after 10 minutes, but Evans would see to it that judges would not be involved in this one. Evans caught a Griffin kick for what would be his only takedown attempt (and subsequent completion) of the fight. From there, Rashad beat the hell out of Forrest until he was out cold.

You can watch the full video (which says Evans is fighting Shogun) at the top of the page. In the first 20 seconds, you’ll hear Mike Goldberg talk about Forrest Griffin’s 2 pound reach advantage.

Here’s Brent Brookhouse’s play-by-play of round 3:

Round 3 – Rashad pounces as Griffin goes down after missing a kick. Rashad is throwing bombs but Griffin survives and gets full guard. Rashad passes to half guard. Very good elbow from Rashad. Rashad is landing heavy shots from the top and Griffin is out! The fight is over and Rashad Evans is the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Rashad Evans wins by TKO (strikes) round 3. Well…I managed to get all 3 big fights on the card wrong but whatever. Evans did a great job of just waiting for his opening and making it count when it was there.

Here’s how Bloody Elbow’s community reacted to the finish.

Evans would promptly lose his title to Lyoto Machida at UFC 98, while Griffin would be Matrix’d by Anderson Silva at UFC 101. While Griffin is retired and in the UFC’s Hall of Fame, Evans is fighting Glover Teixeira in the UFC on FOX 19 main event on Saturday, April 16th.
