Two of the heaviest hitters on the UFC roster could be facing off in the coming months.
Following his impressive knockout victory over Rashad Evans last night (Sat., April 16, 2016) in the main event of UFC on FOX 19 live at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, FL., Glover Teixeira called out fellow former No. 1 contender Anthony Johnson.
Check out the highlights of Teixeira’s finish here.
See, with the Light Heavyweight division log-jammed due to Daniel Cormier’s recent injury and next week’s UFC 197 interim 205-pound title fight between Jon Jones and Ovince St. Preux, both “Rumble” and Teixeira will need to fight before earning another title shot.
With the Brazilian finishing three straight foes, capped off by impeccable victory over a former UFC champ, and Johnson recently mauling both Ryan Bader and Jimi Manuwa, a potential fight between the two men makes perfect sense.
While UFC President Dana White is not all that fond of discussing future fights moments after an event, he did admit he was definitely interested in the potential Light Heavyweight showdown.
From MMAFighting.com:
“It’s all about timing. It’s funny, when [Teixeira] called him out, I went, ‘oh, I like that fight.’ That’s a fun fight. Glover looked awesome tonight. Rashad Evans is always a dangerous guy. Rashad has speed in his hands, he has knockout power himself, and he got caught. You know I don’t make fights after fights, but I gotta be honest, when [Teixeira] called [Johnson] out, I like that fight.”
With Daniel Cormier assured the victor of next weekend’s UFC 197 interim title fight, it seems only logical for UFC brass to set up Teixeira vs. Johnson for the No. 1 contender spot.
In fact, if the timing is right, Teixeira vs. Johnson could wind up being the co-main event when Cormier battles either Jones or St. Preux next.
