Methinks someone is going down for an early nap this weekend …
More than half a decade after their Strikeforce showdown ended in 41 seconds, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight finishers Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Derek Brunson will duke it out once again in UFC on FOX 27’s main event this Saturday evening (Jan. 27, 2018) in Charlotte’s Spectrum Center.
One fight prior, Dennis Bermudez looks to snap a two-fight losing streak against Andre Fili, who has yet to win consecutive fights in UFC. The main card will also feature blue-chip prospect Gregor Gillespie — who was last seen winning “Fight of the Night” — against Jordan Rinaldi, as well as a fun Lightweight battle between Drew Dober and Frank Camacho.
As usual for a FOX show, it’ll be an early start, so here’s how to brighten up that afternoon:
What Went Wrong at UFC 220?
Fair play to Kyle Bochniak. He fought the perfect fight to shut down Brandon Davis’ offense and landed an impressive amount of damage along the way. It was easily his best UFC performance to date and suggests that — in spite of my naysaying — he has a future in the division after all.
UFC on FOX 27 Odds For The Undercard:
Bobby Green (-155) vs. Erik Koch (+135)
Mirsad Bektic (-600) vs. Godofredo Pepey (+450)
Katlyn Chookagian (-160) vs. Mara Romero Borella (+140)
Randa Markos (-160) vs. Juliana Lima (+140)
Justine Kish (-325) vs. Ji Yeon Kim (+265)
Vinc Pichel (-110) vs. Joaquim Silva (-110)
Niko Price (-250) vs. George Sullivan (+210)
Austin Arnett (N/A) vs. Cory Sandhagen (N/A)
Thoughts: Short on star power, short on bargains. Ji Yeon Kim is worth a bit, though more as a “well, it might happen” than a sure-fire success, and Vinc Pichel has the style to win his fight with relatively little issue.
Justine Kish is an incredibly limited fighter. She’s iffy with her hands, hopeless off of her back, and relies on just straight-up overpowering people to bully her way into the clinch or into top control. Kim’s toolbox isn’t terribly deep, either, but she puts together better combinations and will be Kim’s first opponent who is as big as she is. It’s worth putting a bit on the underdog.
In Joaquim Silva’s last fight, he showed that he could be controlled on the mat without too much issue. And while Pichel isn’t as credentialed a wrestler as Reza Madadi, he’s exponentially more dangerous on the feet, which should make up the difference. Provided he doesn’t stay too passive, this is an extremely winnable fight for him.
UFC on FOX 27 Odds For The Main Card:
Ronaldo Souza (-150) vs. Derek Brunson (+130)
Dennis Bermudez (-155) vs. Andre Fili (+135)
Gregor Gillespie (-600) vs. Jordan Rinaldi (+450)
Drew Dober (-175) vs. Frank Camacho (+155)
Thoughts: Nah …
