If there was going to be an event that set the UFC record for most submissions in one fight, it had to be one in Brazil. And sure enough, UFC on FUEL TV 10 in Fortaleza, Brazil, did just that with eight. That includes five submissions out of six fights on the main card.
That also includes a submission in the co-main event, which was for the finals of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 2. Multiple-time world Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Leonardo Santos overcame a shutdown first round from the younger competitor in William Patolino to submit him via head an arm triangle in the second. Patolino looked to be in control in the first frame, taking Santos down and shutting down his vaunted ground game. Yet, fatigue set in in the second round and Patolino ultimately succumbed to the expertise of Santos.
Of those five submissions on the main card, it also includes the main event between two of the best Brazilian heavyweights in MMA, particularly those with submission expertise. Fabricio Werdum, the multiple-time world champion in and out of the gi, managed to use his jiu-jitsu skills to not only control Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on the ground, but submit him in the second round.
Now Werdum moves into interesting territory. Will he get a title shot again Cain Velasquez? Will he face someone else next? We don’t know yet, but for now, it was a night for the ground specialists in MMA.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Fabricio Werdum
