Watch Georges St-Pierre preview this Saturday’s UFC Ottawa main event between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson.
On Saturday, June 18th, UFC welterweight contenders Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson will square off in the main event of UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It’s MacDonald’s first fight since his devastating 5th round TKO loss to champion Robbie Lawler in last year’s epic UFC 189 co-main event. “Wonderboy” is coming off a 1st round KO of former champ Johny Hendricks, and figures to be the next contender with a win this weekend.
As part of the pre-fight hype for this hugely important showdown, the UFC had Georges St-Pierre analyze the matchup. It’s well known that Rory and GSP have known and trained with each other for years, and MacDonald has been hailed as GSP’s successor. Thompson has also trained with GSP at Tristar, Rory and Wonderboy are friends, those two are friends with GSP, so everyone is friends with everybody!
Anyway, you can watch the video at the top of the page. Alternatively, here’s the transcription of the whole clip, and you can read it in his voice.
“Rory MacDonald is really a complete fighter. I remember him as a young, driven boy with a lot of heart, and I was always amazed at how incredible he was as a martial artist. He’s a different breed. He’s got everything to be champion.
I love Stephen Thompson. It’s hard for me to see this fight because I’m friends with both of them. Stephen Thompson came here, sparred with me, and we exchanged tricks. Against anybody else, I would always cheer for Stephen, but Rory is basically like my brother.
The way I see this fight is Stephen Thompson has one way to win the fight, which is striking. On the other hand, I see Rory having many ways of winning this fight. I believe he can win by submission, he can also knock him out. I just hope that the best man wins. I believe it’s going to be a very fun fight to watch.”
