In the main event of UFC Ottawa, Donald Cerrone outclassed Al Iaquinta and dropped him three times in the fight to win a unanimous decision.

What was the high point of the fight?

Cerrone started off the first round well, finding success with his kicks and eventually landing a big knee as Iaquinta shot in for a takedown. In the second round Iaquinta began to find his rhythm, and he wobbled Cerrone briefly with a big right hand.

The two continued to go back and forth, but it was ‘Cowboy’ who started to get the better of the striking exchanges, dropping Iaquinta with a strong jab at the end of the third and a front kick at the beginning of the fourth. In the fifth round Iaquinta was chasing a finish, but Cerrone had already done enough to secure the win.

Where do these two go from here?

After his big decision win over Kevin Lee last December, a win against Cerrone would have definitely pushed Iaquinta up into title contention. He will inevitably drop down in the lightweight rankings with this loss, so maybe a fight with Paul Felder is a good one to make next for Iaquinta.

In his post-fight interview, Cerrone expressed a big interest in fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title. However, despite saying he was done chasing a fight with the UFC superstar, ‘Cowboy’ also called out Conor McGregor for a fight on July 4th.
