This Saturday’s, September 19th., Fight Night event was broadcast from the APEX Fight Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Overall, this massive fourteen-bout card saw six swift finishes in Round 1, four submissions, had a total of five KO/TKOs, and three decisions (two SPLIT) and one MAJORITY DRAW (the co-main event). Rounding things out, bonuses for putting forth POTN efforts went to Khamzat Chimaev, Mackenzie Dern, Randy Costa, and Damon Jackson; and FOTN honors went to… nobody!? Wow, what a fun night of fights we have to discuss with you!
The main event showcased a long-awaited and highly-anticipated welterweight clash between Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington. Unfortunately, the bout was terribly anti-clamactic, especially for a highly-touted main event. Covington backed Woodley up against the fence for nearly twenty-five minutes, battering away at him with elbows and knees, until he eventually succumbed to a fight-ending injury to his ribs; in the co-main event of the night, Niko Price and Donald Cerrone faced off in another welterweight bout, which was actually entertaining — up until the fight was scored a majority draw.
In the main card opener, Mackenzie Dern increased her clout in the UFC, as the BJJ virtuoso finished veteran Randa Markos via an armbar sub in the first round. In a light heavyweight performance, Johnny Walker also came away with a first round finish when he put a swift stop to contender Ryan Spann by raining down elbows and punches for his TKO win. Right before the co-main event of the evening Khamzat Chimaev continued to impress, when the undefeated crowd-puller put veteran middleweight Gerald Meerschaert to sleep with a 17-second knockout punch, right on the button — and that was it, lights out.
Let’s run down the early portion of the event: we ended up starting the undercard portion of the night with six finishes out of eight bouts! In our opener, veteran Tyson Nam finished octagon newcomer, Jerome Rivera, via TKO – punches. A couple bouts up the card, Randy Costa proved he’s the sh*t, when the bantamweight prospect ended Journey Newson via head-kick KO just a mere 41-seconds into round one — to keep the multitude of finishes coming, Darrick Minner achieved his first octagon victory as the submission pundit ended promising prospect, T.J. Laramie, via guillotine sub only fifty-two seconds into round one. As if this wasn’t enough action for the prelims, Jessica-Rose Clark also got her hand raised as ‘Jessy Jess’ ended octagon newcomer, Sarah Alpar, via TKO – punch & knee, in the third round. The up-and-coming women’s flyweight prospect Mayra Bueno Silva garnered her second UFC sub when the Brazilian ended veteran Mara Romero Borella via armbar just a couple minutes into the first round. Toward the end of the preliminary card Damon Jackson made an impressive return when he scored an unexpected sub via guillotine over featherweight veteran Mirsad Bekti?.
