UFC Vegas 12 results: Mitchell wins tough decision over Fili, Hardy TKO’s Greene

On the UFC Vegas 12 main card, Bryce Mitchell won a gritty decision over Andre Fili, and Greg Hardy stopped Maurice Greene with strikes in the second round.

The UFC Vegas 12 main card is almost over, and the co-main event just witnessed the company’s #15 ranked featherweight, Bryce Mitchell, take a hard-fought unanimous decision over a very game Andre Fili. It was the grappling of Mitchell that aided him in swaying the judges, but Bryce had to overcome a hard second-round striking onslaught from Fili. This makes five straight wins for Mitchell, who got his first win in his new camo shorts.

Before that, former NFL star Greg Hardy earned himself a second-round TKO of Maurice Greene. It was there left hand of Hardy that scored the knockdown, and the ground and pound that got the finish. Greene immediately protested the stoppage, citing that he was still moving when the referee decided to stop the fight. Nonetheless, the polarizing Hardy has now posted up consecutive wins.

We got a first-round finish on the main card thanks to Kevin Holland stopping Charlie Ontiveros by way of verbal submission following a violent slam. Holland hit an angry trip from the clinch, prompting Ontiveros to scream out to the referee. Following his win, Holland started talking trash to UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, who was sitting cage-side. This is four wins for Holland in the year 2020, and in his post-fight interview he asked for an opponent with a name. It should be noted that Ontiveros left the Octagon on a stretcher, citing an issue with his neck. The broadcast stated that he was able to feel all of his fingers and down to his toes.

Opening up the main card, lightweights Thiago Moises and Bobby Green fought a tough and competitive 15-minutes. Moises had a strong opening round and dug deep to have successful moments in the third, doing enough to take a unanimous decision. This makes two in a row for Moises, who used his post-fight interview to call for some ranked opposition in his next outing.

Main card:

Bryce Mitchell def. Andre Fili by unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28): Featherweight

It took less than 30-seconds for Mitchell to shoot in for a takedown. Fili fought it off, but Mitchell chained his attempts and took top position. Mitchell controlled from the top for a bit, but Fili scrambled back up to his feet. As soon as Fili was up, though, Mitchell took him right back down. Mitchell owned the grappling, keeping Fili defensive, but as soon as Bryce attacked with a triangle Fili was able to stand up. Mitchell hit a blasting takedown to finishes the round on top.

Fili was able to remain vertical after Mitchell’s first takedown attempt of the second round. A well-timed flying knee from Fili backed off Mitchell, and was Andre’s best strike of the fight up until this point. Mitchell failed at another takedown attempt, but eventually found a way to get on top. FIli exploded up to his feet and knocked the mouthpiece out of Mitchell’s mouth before the bell.

It took Mitchell about 30-seconds to achieve a takedown in the final round, and did so in the center of the Octagon. After sending some time on his back, Fili was able to reverse and make it back to his feet. It didn’t matter, though, because Bryce quickly got himself another takedown. Fili again found himself stuck on the bottom, unable to find a way to make it up to his feet before the end of the round.

Greg Hardy def. Maurice Greene by TKO at 1:12 of round 2: Heavyweight

Greene seemed to hurt his leg while kicking Hardy’s leg. Hardy then rushed in, knocking Greene to the ground and delivering a series of ground strikes. Hardy was warned a couple of times about putting his fingers in the eye. Hardy stood up and the standup battle resumed. It was Hardy who was scoring with the solo strikes, as Greene was just unable to get things going.

The slow-paced kickboxing bout continued into the second act. A huge left hook from Hardy dropped Greene, and the former NFL star pounced with a barrage of ground strikes. Greene tried to improve his position, but the referee had seen enough and stopped the bout.

Kevin Holland def. Charlie Ontiveros by verbal submission at 2:39 of round 1: Middleweight

Ontiveros dropped Holland in the opening sequence with a quick counter punch to start the bout. Holland quickly stood up and got himself a big takedown. Holland controlled from the half guard and north south, dropping elbows and hammerfists. Ontiveros scrambled up to his feet, but was rag-dolled back to the ground. Ontiveros verbally cried out tot he referee, bringing a stop to the bout.

Thiago Moises def. Bobby Green by unanimous decision (29-28 x3): Lightweight

Moises took the center of the Octagon to get things going, launching head kicks at Green. Moises was throwing with bad intentions, but ended up on the bottom after a botched takedown. They stood back up and Green attacked the lead leg of his opponent before coming over the top with his hands. In an exchange, Green felt like he was poked in the eye, but the referee told them to fight on. Upon review, it was a punch and not an eye poke.

Green got himself a takedown in the second act. but Moises was quick to spring back up. Moises dropped back for a leg lock, but after a frantic scramble from Green, the fight returned to its feet. Green began attacking the body with punches, causing Moises to back up to the fence. The output of Moises did dwindle this round, but he did pick it up a bit just before the bell.

The striking battle continued into the final round. The fighters went back and forth, with a cut opening up on the forehead of Green. Neither man was really able to take over on the feet. Green shot in for a takedown, but Moises defended well and took top position. Green ultimately worked to his feet and the fighters slugged it out in the closing moments of the fight.
