UFC Vegas 29 results: Vera wins war with Grant, Brown one-punch KO’s Lima

On the finish-happy UFC Vegas 29 main card, Bruno Silva violently knocked out Wellington Turman, and Matt Brown starched Dhiego Lima with one punch.

The UFC Vegas 29 main card is still in progress and we have gotten some explosive finishes and competitive decisions. In the co-main event, surging heavyweight, Sergey Spivak, earned a hard fought decision over the timeless Aleksei Oleinik. Spivak did solid work on his feet, stuffed takedowns, and avoided getting submitted on the ground. He passed his I.Q. test and extends his winning streak to three.

Before that, we got a top shelf bantamweight battle between the #15 ranked, Marlon Vera, and the ever-tough Davey Grant. Both men landed quality strikes throughout, and this grueling war took place in all facets of the sport, but it was Chito Vera who did the better damage to take home the unanimous decision. Grant fought hard, but it was Chito’s night to get himself a win and keep his spot in the rankings.

In the featherweight division, Seung Woo Choi made quick work of Julian Erosa, putting him away with big strikes in the opening round. It was a hefty left hook that sat down Erosa, and then a couple of followup ground strikes made it official. Choi looked fantastic tonight as he earned his first UFC finish, and extended his wining streak to three fights in a row.

We got a ruthless ground and pound knockout on the main card when Bruno Silva put Wellington Turman out cold in the opening round. As Turman rolled for an armbar, his own arm was trapped and unable to block the incoming punches, so he went to sleep. This is Silva’s UFC debut and his first fight since November of 20128. I would say he made quite a statement.

Opening up the main card, Matt Brown pulled off a spectacular one-punch knockout of Dhiego Lima in the second round. Its was a perfectly placed right cross that landed on the button and sent Lima falling unconscious to the floor. The 40-year old Brown just pulled off a wicked finish in his 38th UFC fight. He is also tied for most knockouts in the promotion’s history. Wow, wow, and wow!

Main card:

Sergey Spivak def. Aleksei Oleinik by unanimous decision (29-28 x3): Heavyweight

Oleinik took the center of the cage early, pumping his jab and winging bombs. Spivak responded with a flurry that got through, but Oleinik kept wildly throwing. Oleinik was trying to mix in takedown attempts, but Spivak’s defense held up. It wasn’t until there was about one-minute to go in the round that Oleinik was able to drag Spivak to the ground. He briefly attempted a scarf choke, before bailing and scoring with an elbow before the horn.

Oleinik worked his jab some more at the start of the second round. He would then wing haymakers at Spivak, with a lot of them getting blocked. Oleinik then pulled guard, but Spivak shut down his sweep attempts and dropped some meaningful punches from the top. Spivak then jumped on a guillotine, giving Oleinik top position for the final 30-seconds. Naturally, Oleinik worked hard for a scarf hold,, but ran out of time before he could get a tap.

Spivak pumped his jab in the final frame, jousting Oleinik as he pressed forward. A cut was opened up on the head of Oleinik, but the blood didn’t seem to be affecting his vision. Oleinik shot in for a takedown, but Spivak sprawled and unloaded a couple of punches. The forward pressure did not stop as Oleinik kept punching and marching forward. He was doing well until he shot for the takedown and ended up on the bottom until the bell.

Marlon Vera def. Davey Grant by unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28, 30-26): Bantamweight

Grant came out looking to attack the legs of Chito right away. He then built upon that by unloading some hands. Chito was sitting back looking to be defensively sound, staying aware of what was coming at him. Chito was eating some punches before catching a kick and briefly taking top position. Grant worked up to his feet and landed some more punches, while Chito was attacking the leg and forcing stance switches.

Chito went right back got the leg kicks in the second round. Grant responded with more combination punching, causing Chito to go to the high guard. Then, Chito sliced open his foe with a slicing elbow on the inside. That’s when Grant elected to hit a takedown around the midpoint of the round. Chito tried to scramble up, but Davey controlled from the top, dropping strikes when he could. A botched guillotine attempt from Grant gave Chito a moment to take top position, and Vera was able to drop a couple of blows of his own before the bell.

Grant shot in for a takedown to start the final frame, but Chito sprawled on him and spun around to the back. From there, he attacked with a RNC, and then with an arm triangle. Grant escaped and stood to his feet, bombing away and actually connecting. Chito uncorked a series of elbows and knees from the clinch, and then hit a trip to put Davey on his back. He stayed on top, denying Grant the chance to get back to his feet. Chito went hard for a RNC as time ticked away, but Grant was too tough to tap.

Seung Woo Choi def. Julian Erosa by TKO at 1:37 of round 1: Featherweight

Choi opened the bout with some heaters, peppering Erosa with leather early on. Erosa was throwing back, but he wasn’t throwing with the same sort of velocity as Choi. Then, a left hook landed on the button and Erosa hit the deck. A couple of ground strikes landed and the referee had seen enough.

Bruno Silva def. Wellington Turman by KO at 4:45 of round 1: Middleweight

Turman closed the distance right away to get things going, but Silva was able to reverse the position. Both fighters got away with fence grabs, with both getting warned by the referee. Turman began to grind on Silva, keeping a bodylock and making him carry his weight. Turman jumped onto the back of his foe while Silva was still standing, and spent quite some time there. Silva escaped out of the back door and into top position. He smashed down with several hard ground strikes, making the most of his opportunity. As Turman looked to roll for an armbar, he trapped his own arm and Silva blasted him with unblocked punches that put him out cold.

Matt Brown def. Dhiego Lima by KO at 3:02 of round 2: Welterweight

Lima looked to land low calf kicks to get things going. Brown responded with some leg kicks of his own, but was landing to the thigh. The pace wasn’t exactly high, with respect being shown on both sides. Lima stayed with his calf attack, causing some redness on Brown’s lower leg.

Lima opened the second act with a flurry of punches, and then shot in for the takedown. Brown did a solid job of fighting off the grappling advances and remaining on his feet. Lima kept going to the clinch, but just couldn’t get his opponent to the mat. Then, Brown uncorks a perfect right hand that totally knocked out Lima. HOLY COW!
