Bloody Elbow fight experts, Zane Simon & Dayne Fox, are here tonight – Saturday, August 21st., 2021, to breakdown the UFC Vegas 34: ‘Jared Cannonier vs. Kelvin Gastelum’ event, which was broadcast from the cozy confines of the Apex Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The guys will have hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event in the player above, or on our Bloody Elbow Presents YouTube Channel and BE Presents Podcast Network. (SPOILERS…)
The UFC featured a Middleweight clash in the main event of tonight’s Fight Night card. It was anticipated to be a worthwhile bout to catch, between fight veterans, number 3-ranked contender Jared Cannonier, who was sporting a 13-5 record, and number 9-seeded Kelvin Gastelum with his 17-7 record.
“I’m broke. So I need to fight. Hopefully I get that title shot, but the right name might make me say yes.” – Jared Cannonier #UFCVegas34

Outcome: ‘Tha Killa Gorilla’ came out the Middleweight victor tonight when he earned a ferocious unanimous decision win over Gastelum in our Main Event. They traded some leg kicks early on, a vicious left hand was landed by Cannonier during the course of the bout. In the third round Cannonier rocked Gastelum with a ‘rock-em sock-em robot’ style punch, Gastelum kept his head and went the distance though, despite a brief knock down in the fourth. He countered with a take down of his own before it was over; but when all was said and done, the ambidextrous Cannonier walked away with that “W” tonight.
It’s such a load Pantoja and Royval weren’t at the least the co-main event. #UFCVegas34

For the co-main event we had a Lightweight brawl between the returning OG combatant, Clay Guida with a storied 36-20 record and up-and-comer, the 10-0 undefeated, Mark O. Madsen, grappling it out in the co-main event.
“There’s a guy out there, saying he’s the best wrestler in the division. I don’t know what style, because it’s sure not Greco Roman. Gergor Gillespie I’m coming for you.” – Mark O. Madsen #UFCVegas34

Outcome: “Following a broken jaw suffered in his last fight as well as the devastating news that his wife had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling had the odds against him going into Saturday night. Still, Madsen hung tough with Clay Guida round after round and ultimately gutted out a hard fought split decision to remain undefeated in his professional fighting career. The scorecards read 30-27, 29-28 and 28-28 with Madsen moving to 11-0 with the win.” – ht MMAFighting
Pretty sure Pichel called for a rematch with Gregor Gillespie after that fight. #UFCVegas34

Also on the card, we had a highly-anticipated Flyweight bout between Alexandre ‘The Cannibal’ Pantoja and Brandon ‘Raw Dog’ Royval, a Bantamweight bout between Brian ‘Boom’ Kelleher and Domingo Pilarte, a Women’s Bantamweight match up between Josiane Nunes and Bea Malecki, a decent scrap between Light Heavyweights William Knight and Fabio Cherant, which were part of a decent card tonight overall.
Fantastic fight between Pantoja and Royval. Pantonja likely gets a title shot. Royval has nothing to be ashamed of. I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t get his own shot at the gold sooner rather than later. #UFCVegas34

“Now is my time. I see you in December.” – Alexandre Pantoja calling for his title shot against Brandon Moreno. #UFCVegas34

Notable Outcomes: Veteran submission artist Pantoja impressively choked out rising contender Royval in a wild fight, possibly sealing his trajectory to a UFC Flyweight title shot tonight, via rear naked choke in the second round. Chilean fighter Ignacio Bahamondes gave us an astounding knockout finish, maybe one of the better ones of the year to date, when he dropped Lightweight combatant Roosevelt Roberts with a round spinning back kick in the third round. Acclaimed prospect Bea Malecki suffered from a one punch knockout, in an upset against newcomer Josiane Nunes with a promising UFC debut tonight. Light Heavyweight prospect Fabio Cherant was taken out by an impressive first-round knockout punch via William Knight. Not to disappoint, our opening prelim bout featured yet another finish when Welterweight Sasha Palatnikov was submitted via rear-naked choke in the first round by Ramiz Brahimaj in his first UFC win.
Four fights and four Bonus worthy performances. @ufc, please break the budget and reward the fighters accordingly. You’re going to be profiting off these highlights for years. #UFCVegas34
