Chris Weidman just took a gritty unanimous decision over Omari Akhmedov in the UFC Vegas 6 co-main event.

The UFC Vegas 6 co-main event was the setting where the promotion’s former 185-pound champ, Chris Weidman, made his return to his original division by taking a gritty decision over the #11 ranked middleweight, Omari Akhmedov. This was a grueling bout, with both men looking for takedowns and both men being forced to dig deep down the stretch. Weidman was able to take over with his grappling in the final round to totally dominate and secure the victory. This was a must-win for Weidman, who has had a recent well-documented rough patch against the world’s greatest fighters at 185-pounds and 205-pounds alike.

Weidman tried to get his wrestling going early in the first round, but Akhmedov did a great job of fighting them off. On the feet, both men landed a couple of clean punches but nothing too damaging. Akhmedov tried to get a takedown but Weidman was having none of it and got the takedown himself. Akhmedov was rendered defensive for well over 90-seconds.

Akhmedov got an early takedown in the second round, despite Weidman getting away with a fence grab. Weidman stood back up and had to absorb a couple of punches to do so. It was Akhmedov pressing the action and pushing Weidman backwards. Weidman gave up another takedown, but he was able to get back up without incident. Both men were gassed by the end of the round.

Weidman tried to get a takedown to start the second round, and failed on his initial attempt but stuck with and got Akhmedov down. Akhmedov was forced to carry Weidman’s weight and fight off several bad positions. Weidman even attempted a Suloev Stretch and an arm triangle before riding out the rest of the round in full mount.

Chris Weidman def. Omari Akhmedov by unanimous decision (29-27 x2, 29-28): Middleweight
