UFC Vegas 97 went down last night (Sat., Sept. 7, 2024) from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, featuring a Welterweight showdown that saw Sean Brady defeat former title challenger, Gilbert Burns, after 25 minutes of action (recap here). In the co-main event, Natalia Silva defeated Jessica Andrade in a back-and-forth women’s Flyweight matchup.
Biggest Winner: Sean Brady
Since losing to Belal Muhammad two years ago, Brady has bounced back with two straight wins over Kelvin Gastelum and now Burns, both former title challengers. Brady is now 7-1 inside the Octagon, and looks to make a jump into the Top 5 following his latest conquest. If he can continue to rack up wins in a hurry, he could eventually earn a rematch against Muhammad, who now sits on top of the division throne.
Runner Up: Natalia Silva
Silva just keeps on racking up the wins, securing consecutive victory No. 12. And she did so by winning the dual against former champion, Jessica Andrade. Silva improves her undefeated record inside the Octagon to six straight, which means she could be getting closer to the Top 5. To make it a bit sweeter, she and Andrade earned an extra $50K for “Fight of the Night.”
Honorable Mention: Steve Garcia
Garcia secured his fifth straight win inside the Octagon, all stoppage victories, after stopping Kyle Nelson via first-round technical knockout. Garcia has really found his groove and he is always full speed ahead once the opening bell sounds. If he keeps on racking up the stoppage victories, he could be looking at a Top 15 ranking very soon. Not to mention, he also won an extra $50,000 in post-fight bonus cash.
Biggest Loser: Matt Schnell
A change in opponent is never easy, but it’s especially harder on the person accepting the short notice bout against someone who was already in camp. That said, Cody Durden rose to the occasion after agreeing to face Schnell after Alessandro Costa withdrew from the event. Indeed, Durden looked great, eventually slapping on an anaconda chokes in the second round to force the tap from Schnell, who has now lost three straight fight – four of five overall – all stoppages. After the loss, Schnell announced his retirement from the fight game, so if this is truly it for him, he doesn’t go out on a high note.
