UFC waiting for Conor McGregor vs. Cole Miller result before booking Dustin Poirier’s next fight

The UFC is electing to wait for the result of July’s Conor McGregor vs. Cole Miller grudge match before booking the next fight for top-10 featherweight contender Dustin Poirier, according to a report by MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani on UFC Tonight.

McGregor (14-2), the brash Irishman who’s a perfect 2-0 through two UFC contests, is scheduled to fight Miller (21-8) on July 19, 2014 at Dublin’s The O2 arena.

According to Helwani, if McGregor manages to defeat Miller, and in doing so shows that he deserves a step up in competition, UFC officials will subsequently match the Irishman up against Poirier (16-3).

However, if Miller emerges victorious, matchmakers will reportedly look elsewhere, as Miller and Poirier are teammates in Coconut Creek, FL.

McGregor vs. Miller is slated to serve as the featured attraction for the UFC’s first event in Ireland since 2009. Both headliners have already publicly noted their dislike for one another, engaging in a lengthy war of words on a recent episode of The MMA Hour.

“I’m looking past you, Cole,” McGregor said. “I want the gold. Jose (Aldo) is a schmuck. Chad (Mendes) is a schmuck. Cub (Swanson) is a schmuck. Your teammate Dustin is a schmuck. All you guys are schmucks, yeah? This division is filled with a who’s who of has beens and rookies. You are on the ‘has been’ list. Nobody gives a s–t, Cole.”

While on the show, the unabashed 25-year-old also continually referred to Poirier as “Peahead” and commanded Miller to bring his ATT teammate to their July fight, so he could “whoop him too.”

Poirier (16-3) is currently the UFC’s No. 6 ranked featherweight. The young American capped off a three-fight win streak last month, stopping Akira Corassani with punches in the second round at The Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale.
