Thoughts: You know what? I’m tired of losing. We’re ending this year in the black come hell or high water. How, you might ask? Jack. F***ing. Hermansson. That’s how.
“Mutante” has fought nine times in UFC, and at this point, it’s hard to picture him making the radical changes he’d need to be competitive at the highest level. He remains too fragile to slug it out and too mediocre with his wrestling to grind out elite opposition. Hermansson, on the other hand, is on an absolute tear and has shown himself more than Ferreira’s match on the feet and on the mat. I expect him to win authoritatively, so use him as the lynchpin in your parlays.
Yes, parlays. Plural. My rules haven’t worked for squat this year, so let’s break them a bit.
Elsewhere, there’s value in Thales Leites, Gadzhimurad Antigulov, Anna Elmose and Magnus Cedenblad. We’ll go piece-by-piece.
Krzysztof Jotko has had some impressive moments in the cage, particularly his one-hitter-quitter of Tamdan McCrory last time out, but he has also looked very human at times such as his awkward struggles on the feet against Bradley Scott. Leites is more than capable of shutting down his wrestling and his punching power and durability give him the edge on the feet. Therefore, expect Leites to win comfortably.
Considering the way Konstantin Erokhin and Dmitry Smoliakov imploded in UFC, one would think I’d hesitate before betting on another hot-shot Russian prospect. Well, I’m riding this sunk-cost fallacy all the way to the bank. I’m a fan of Rogerio de Lima and he packs wicked power, but his wrestling and bottom game haven’t come close to catching up with his striking. Antigulov’s relentless takedown onslaught ought to be a hard counter to the Brazilian’s sometimes overly passive kickboxing. Therefore, a moderate bet on Antigulov makes sense.
Elmose has enough questions facing her defensive grappling and weight cut to preclude a big bet on her, but she’s definitely worth a look. The Dane hits hard enough to break down other Bantamweight fighters in the division and has a lovely striking arsenal to complement that power.
Betting on Cedenblad is less about any particular deficiencies in Marshman and more about how much of a pain in the ass the former is to fight in one’s debut. He’s extremely tall for the division and is quite well-rounded, excelling in wrestling. Marshman’s a decent puncher, but it’s hard to envision him putting away Cedenblad without getting wrestled into the ground. “Jycken” is certainly worth the investment.
