Jon Jones can’t get out of his own way.
The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion was cited by a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputy back on Jan. 31, 2016, after he was caught driving without a license, registration, or insurance, which amounts to a traffic stop hat trick.
Not surprisingly, “Bones” will head back to court on Wednesday (Feb. 9), according to KRQE News, to answer for his latest run-in with Johnny Law.
While not typically the kind of offense that warrants a raised eyebrow, the timing couldn’t be worse. Jones was recently booked to rematch Daniel Cormier for the 205-pound strap at the upcoming UFC 197 pay-per-view (PPV) event on April 23 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jones is forced to run it back with “DC” because his belt was stripped in the wake of his hit-and-run accident last April (more on that here). While he was able to avoid jail time, the judge made it clear “Bones” was on thin ice due to his history of bad decisions behind the wheel.
As of this writing, the promotion has not issued a statement and the UFC 197 main event is expected to remain intact, but there is an outside chance this latest incident could be classified as a violation of his probation. That, however, is for the court to decide.
