The former bantamweight champion sounds like he’s taking Figueiredo’s threats to take his “head off” seriously.
Cody Garbrandt’s claim to a flyweight title shot may have been a tenuous one, but it seems the former bantamweight king has been just the right man to create some tension with champion Deiveson Figueiredo. ‘Deus da Guerra’ took to Instagram recently to cut a promo on his future opponent.
“Hey Cody, motherf-ck, I will go take your head off, motherf-ck,” Figueiredo shouted into the camera in a brief video posted to social media.
“You think you are going to take my Belt?” the flyweight champion added, in a written message accompanying the post. “I go to sleep dreaming of taking your head off!!!! I wake up thinking of knocking you out. my whole day is dedicated to putting you to sleep!!!!”
If it seems like the Brazilian is raising the stakes on his Team Alpha Male rival, however, Garbrandt doesn’t appear to be having any trouble calling his bluff. ‘No Love’ responded to Figueiredo via a post directed at his manager, Wallid Ismail, on Twitter—telling the former Vale Tudo fighter and longtime Jungle Fight MMA promoter, to “bring a f-cking body bag so you can carry this golem back to Brazil.”
You two lemon head mfers need go realize, I’m not trying to sell this fight! I’m going to fuck him up Wallid bring a fuckin body bag so you can carry this golem back to Brazil uh vai morrer deez nuts https://t.co/JAWYOvHpCO

Garbrandt is fresh off a knockout of Raphael Assuncao in a bantamweight fight at UFC 250 on June 6th. The win is his first since 2016, when he bested Dominick Cruz to capture the title at 135 lbs. Garbrandt then suffered a pair of humiliating KO losses to now-disgraced former champion TJ Dillashaw—as well as a similar defeat to Pedro Munhoz in March of 2019.
However, the UFC left themselves with a distinct lack of flyweight challengers after purging much of the roster in the wake of Demetrious Johnson’s departure to ONE Championship. And while Garbrandt may never have fought at 125 lbs before, right now it appears he’s in the right place at the right time to take a shot at Figueiredo’s belt.
