Former World Extreme Cagefighting champion Urijah ‘The California Kid’ Faber (26-5) is used to the spotlight, having fought under the lights of some of the biggest mixed martial arts events in the world.
Sadly, for ‘The California Kid’ the spotlight is focused in on him and his family right now for an unpleasant reason.
This past Friday, Faber’s little sister, Michaella Tastad, was involved in a motor vehicle accident and suffered life-threatening injuries, including trauma to the head. That particular injury has forced doctors to keep the former champs younger sister in a drug-induced coma.
A report from Sacbee.com details the incident and Michaella’s current condition, which has improved since the accident.
Michaella Tastad, 19, was driving home Friday with a friend at 3 a.m. when she rear ended a vehicle slowing down near the site of a single-car accident, according to California Highway Patrol Officer David Martinez. A few minutes later, three more cars collided. Three people were taken to the hospital, but only Tastad suffered major injuries, Martinez said.
Faber said his sister received life-threatening head trauma and is in a medically induced coma at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. He said Tastad also has a collapsed lung, spleen damage and several other injuries.
Part of Tastad’s skull was removed and she underwent a second surgery to insert a shunt to help drain fluid, Faber said.
Faber posted some good news from the hospital on Twitter (@UrijahFaber) on Wednesday.
Been at the Hosptl all day, Kayla isn’t awake yet, but they stopped w the sedatives & shes been moving her legs & squeezes w her left hand.
Been reading her long term goals to her, and just staying positive. Gonna b a long process.
We here at The MMA News want to send out our thoughts and prayers to ‘The California Kid’, his family, friends, and most of all, his sister Michaella for a successful recovery.
