Paige VanZant was supposed to agree to fight Maycee Barber, but changed her mind due to the latter’s “inappropriate” actions.
Undefeated women’s flyweight fighter Maycee Barber has had her eye on Paige VanZant for a while now. A matchup has not come to fruition, and according to Barber, it’s because VanZant “doesn’t want to have her face damaged.”
VanZant spoke about Barber during a studio appearance on Monday’s Ariel Helwani MMA Show, where she clarified why a fight never happened between them.
“Actually, I was going to say yes to the fight, but i think it’s completely inappropriate to slide into someone’s husband’s DM’s tying to get a fight,” VanZant said (transcript by MMA Mania). “Messaging my husband on Instagram trying to agitate me.
“So that’s why I have stayed relatively quiet about this and, I’m just not going to reward disrespectful people. It would be a reward for her to fight me and she doesn’t deserve it.”
VanZant last fought in January, when she defeated Rachel Ostovich via second-round submission. She has one fight left in her contract, which she hopes to take by the end of the year.
